Snare drums ring and should ring. That ring gives the drum resonance and character. But in music, you sometimes need to tweak your gear to fit the situation you are in. The recording studio is definitely a time where you need to be able to adapt your gear. If the producer or artist asks you to make that snare ring go away, a very easy solution is to cut a piece of Moongel in half and place it about two or three inches away from the rim of the drum. It will take away the ring and usually leave the character, sound, and vibe of the drum intact.
