DMX512-A

DMX512-A is a standard developed in 1998 by ESTA (Entertainment Services and Technology Association) for controlling stage lighting and effects. The official name of this iteration of DMX512 is “Asynchronous Serial Digital Data Transmission Standard for Controlling Lighting Equipment and Accessories.” DMX512-A was based on the DMX512 standard developed in 1986 by the Engineering Commission of United States Institute for Theatre Technology (USITT). “DMX512” stands for “Digital Multiplex with 512 pieces of information.”

DMX512-A supports eight-pin modular (8P8C, or “RJ-45”) connectors for fixed installations where rigging is not required. Standard Cat-5 cables have been approved for use with DMX512-A.
