More properly called a “memory card reader,” a card reader is a device that can read data off of a card-shaped solid-state storage medium, such as a Compact Flash card, an SD card, or an SDHC card. Typically, card readers are available as small external peripheralsthat connect to a computer via USB. However, built-in card readers are also available in certain personal computers.
