In a related story to the Sony BMG issue, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales gave a speech before the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Anti-Counterfeiting and Piracy Summit. Gonzales outlined a broad legislative proposal entitled the “Intellectual Property Protection Act of 2005.” The package proposes much stiffer penalties for repeat copyright offenders, expanding intellectual property protection, and adding investigative tools for both criminal and civil enforcement. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) was quick to issue a response to the proposal. Chairman and CEO, Mitch Bainwol, praised the administration for its commitment to protect musicians, songwriters, record labels and the music they produce. “Given the growing sophistication of today’s music piracy trade, taking the profit out of crime is now important than ever,” said Bainwol. “Over the past year, we have seen major advancements in both policy and personnel focused specifically on safeguarding our nation’s intellectual property.”
