Microsoft has announced that its Windows AntiSpyware application will soon be updated to add a detection and removal feature that will rid affected PCs of the “rootkit” component of Sony BMG Music’s XCP digital rights management technology. As we’ve reported here, some Sony BMG CDs, when played on personal computers, install hidden copy protection software. This so-called “spyware” was found to leave users open to viruses and other serious security risks. Windows users will get the removal feature through the anti-spyware application’s weekly update process. Microsoft’s Anti-Malware Technology team announced it would also be included in the next version of Windows Defender.
