Practically speaking, a return is the opposite of a send. A return provides an input at some point in an audio device or chain. Returns are often accompanied by sends to create what are known as insert points. Returns can also stand alone on their own, but often take the form of effects returns or tape returns, which technically correspond to effect sends and tape sends.
