In music, the rhythmically significant stress in the articulation of notes, giving some notes more relative prominence than others within a measure. It’s usually accomplished by making a given beat louder and/or longer. Accents often occur at regular intervals within the meter, which provides a specific type of feel or groove, but they can just as often be used to make a one-time impact at a particular point in a piece.
