The British term for vacuum tube, popularized because the first tube was known as the Fleming valve named for its inventor Ambrose Fleming. The term most likely originated because in many respects a tube acts as the electronic equivalent of a valve: regulating the flow of electrons (as opposed to some fluid). In our industry the two terms are more or less interchangeable.
