In pro audio and music production, to edit means to to revise, correct, eliminate, expunge, or improve audio or musical data. One can edit an audio waveform or MIDI data in about the same way that one can edit text in a word processor. You can cut, copy, and paste, replace one audio waveform for another, shorten a passage of music by eliminating some of its MIDI on/off information, or any number of other tasks. In today’s music and audio production, editing is as much a part of the creative process as it is a polishing or fixing process. We can edit breathes in and out of a vocal comp to show emotion; we can edit MIDI data such as volume, pan, modulation, portamento, etc. to affect the expression of a performance. The events one can edit in music and audio today are made possible by the incredible tools available by software and hardware alike.
