Also known by its Latin name (Tilliana Americana), basswood has long been prized as one of the world’s foremost carving woods because it allows cuts both across and with the grain, as well. Basswood itself is soft and light with heartwood that ranges from a creamy white to a creamy brown. Its sapwood is nearly white.
