Gibson was the first guitar company to offer a SmartWood guitar, which is an instrument made completely from wood certified by the Rainforest Alliance. For example, the Les Paul SmartWood Studio, made from an ever-changing supply of exotic tonewoods, underscores Gibson’s continuing commitment to sustainable forestry management. Currently Gibson is offering SmartWood Studios with carved muira piranga tops and fingerboards, mahogany backs (all certified by the Rainforest Alliance), and a mahogany neck with a 1959 rounded profile. Available colors currently are limited to Muiricatiera (also called Muir for short). Other exotic tonewoods used as carved tops in the series includes ambay guasa, banana, taperyva, cancharana, peroba, and quasa. All SmartWood Les Pauls have the Forest Stewardship Council SmartWood-certified forestry designation on the truss rod cover. The FSC trademark identifies products that contain wood from well-managed forests, certified in accordance with the rules and regulations set forth by the Forest Stewardship Council. A portion of all sales is donated to benefit the Rainforest Alliance.
