Also known as a “dust dome” or “dome,” a speaker’s dust cap is a concave or convex dome that covers the hole in the center of the cone. The dust cap protects the voice coil from dust, small particles, and other forms of contamination that might hinder the voice coil’s motion. The manufacturer may also use the dust cap to help control peaks and dips in the speaker’s frequency response. Typically, the dust cap is made from the same material as the speaker cone, and may radiate sound along with the cone. In some cases, such as dome tweeters, the dust cap/dome is the diaphragm that radiates the sound.
