From inSync reader P.C. comes the question, “I just purchased a new 10,000 RPM hard drive and I have an old table top enclosure laying around. I was wondering if it is OK to install the new drive in this extra enclosure?”
We would not recommend it. The new 10,000 RPM drives run quite warm and need extra ventilation to keep them cool. Most older enclosures will not provide the needed ventilation. In fact it is often necessary to add a fan to these drives when mounting them inside of a computer, even if the computer already has cooling fans. These drives are new so we’re sure that over time it will become possible to build models that will be smaller and run cooler, as well as being less expensive.
