InSync reader Larry P offers the following method for getting a direct out from a Mackie CR series mixer:
“I have had good success using a cable adapter consisting of a 1/4″ TRS – to – 1/8” mini TRS plugged into a mini – to – 1/4″ mono headphone adapter plug. The components are off-the-shelf from Radio Shack and using the TRS fully inserted into the Mackie insert jack and the other end of the adapted cable assembly into a tape machine or a monitor mixer works just fine. I have had to use this method when taking the insert out from the Mackie and patching it into a PA mixer while retaining independent control of the various signals for a simultaneous recording. Just thought that if someone else hasn’t suggested this already, it might be a useful bit of info.”
It is interesting, but I see no obvious advantage to doing what everyone else does, which is to use a normal 1/4-inch cable and plug it into the insert to the first click (not all the way in). This connects the tip of the cable (hot) to the ring or send of the insert without breaking the return connection. This is a tried and true method that works great and doesn’t involve all of the extra connections above.
