Q: I’ve just loaded the full version of MOTU’s Digital Performer 5 into my Mac, which already had Native Instruments Komplete 3 installed. When I opened an instrument track in DP, I noticed that all of my virtual instruments didn’t show up in the drop-down menu. How can I get DP to recognize them?
A: First, go to Native Instrument’s web site and make sure you’ve downloaded and installed all the updates for your NI virtual instruments. The next step is to get DP 5 to rescan the plug-ins. This is a function that it normally only does once during initial setup – there isn’t a menu command to initiate it. The trick is to delete the preference file “AudioUnit info cache” from the following folder: Macintosh HD/Users/~/Library/Preferences/Digital Performer. Then, restart DP 5. It should rescan your plug-ins as if the program were freshly installed.
Bonus tip: For Logic Pro users who may be having the same problem, start the Logic AU Manager from the Logic Menu/Preferences. Rescan individual plug-ins or reset and rescan all plug-ins. Even after scanning, you may need to activate a plug-in by clicking the checkbox next to it. If the AU manager shows there’s a problem with a particular plug-in don’t try to activate it.
