Continuing our discussion of this effect (which we began yesterday), we wrote that when using Automatic Mode, three steps are all that might be required. However, if at this point the results are not what you’re after, you can try one of the following:
- Edit the scale notes. Depending upon the specific vocal line, adding or removing one or more scale notes will produce distinctively different effects.
- Try setting Auto-Tune to a different key or scale entirely.
- You can try a chromatic scale, although if you’re after the classic “Cher Effect,” a chromatic scale rarely works.
- You can try setting the Retune Speed to 1 or 2, rather than 0. This allows for small pitch variations and somewhat less instant note transitions, but it’s possible that this may produce just the right effect for a particular song.
- Sometimes it’s okay to bypass the Auto-Tune Vocal Effect altogether, using it for just certain parts or even just certain phrases. Experiment, because the effect is not an instant fix in all cases.
Tomorrow we will look at Auto-Tune’s Graphical Mode.
