When you are in a recording session, things can happen quickly, and it’s easy to neglect taking appropriate notes on the recording — mic positions, preamp and processor settings, ancillary gear used, signal routing, and so on.
But this can really come back to bite you later if you need to return to a session and replace or duplicate a sound. While it’s no substitute for good notetaking (many DAWs provide a space with each track for making notes), you can take a quick photo of the setup and knob settings with a digital camera, then save the photo file into the same folder the session data lives in.
But the best solution is simply to get in the habit of documenting everything, either into the DAW or on paper.
