A Fretless Electric Bass with Island Spirit

Kala adds a fretless all-electric twist to its ukulele-style U-Bass design with the 23.5-inch scale length Solidbody U-Bass. This 4-string instrument is a blast to play for bassists of all backgrounds, including small-framed beginners, and it is an excellent companion for Tiny Desk–style performances, compact stage spaces, road trips, rehearsals, and more, as well as a great way to explore fretless bass without a large investment. But don’t be fooled by its diminutive build. The Solidbody U-Bass is designed with playability at the forefront, which is why it’s structured with a comfortable C-shaped Canadian maple neck and rosewood fingerboard with 22 handy fret line markers that guide your fingertips. A custom okoume body with deep cutaways retains a solid weight and provides effortless access to every note you need. Even if you’re new to fretless bass, this instrument keeps the learning curve negligible. Meanwhile, a classic split-coil pickup with accompanying Volume and Tone controls generates the grooves, affording bassists access to virtually any tone, from tamed and plucky to bright and funky. Sweetwater bassists have found the added touches of die-cast 18:1 tuners, a PPS nut, and a custom pickguard shape put the Solidbody U-Bass in a league of its own!

Mini bass with mighty tonewoods

The Solidbody U-Bass leverages premier wood choices to provide the most quality playing feel possible for its size, including a neck of Canadian maple topped with rosewood. This combination delivers a C-shaped neck profile that lands easily and ergonomically in all players’ hands, with a sustain-favoring and ultra-smooth playing surface that optimizes its 23.5-inch footprint. Rooted at the body end in 100% solid okoume, this bass is light enough to match its compact nature yet substantial enough to keep the pocket tight.

Impressively stout split-coil

If ever there were a 4-string to not judge by its size, the Solidbody U-Bass makes a firm case, with exhibit B being its split-coil pickup. Taking a page from revered designs of the past, the Solidbody U-Bass’s split single-coil pickup opens the door to a wildly versatile tone that’s heartier than you might expect. Enhancing the best traits of its entire tuning range, the split-coil design will help you churn out tones and techniques you’d never assume possible with a short-scale bass. From fingerstyle and funk slaps to precision picking in just about any genre you can conjure, the Solidbody U-Bass is happy to acclimate. Roll on some tone and volume to taste, and you’ll see what we mean!

A well-equipped instrument for any occasion

Regardless of its scale, a sonic option like the Solidbody U-Bass that’ll have your back when it counts is a must. Trust in die-cast tuners with impressive 18:1 tuning ratios to hold your intonation and adjust with stunning precision. Likewise, a PPS nut ensures an even response for every string, while the adjustable truss rod makes it easy to keep the neck of your Kala attuned to fluctuating climates. Such attention to quality means the Solidbody U-Bass is not only a tremendous first bass for young players but also a solution for a host of other applications, including compact studio tracking, small-space gigs, bedroom jams, travel-friendly rehearsals, and beyond.

Reviews

I wanted to play a little bass ... so I got a little bass.
Truth be hold, piano is my primary instrument ... but I have also spent quite a bit of time behind the drum kit too. Bass was something I've always wanted to play around with and I long considered trying to find a piccolo bass - since I heard they had a smaller scale size.

But then I saw the Kala U-Bass and watched several awesome reviews on YouTube. When I noticed there was a fretless version, I was all in - because if I am going to play bass, I really want that fretless sound.

So I picked up the U-Bass and the Fender Rumble 40 to go along with it. I can't stop playing around with this bass, as it is so fun, super-solid and sounds amazing. Shout out to Will Houston for being amazing answering all of my questions!

Have a really great day!

Play Forever
Great bass. I know that no matter how old I get, I will be able to play this bass. I need a stand for full size basses because of my shoulder, but I can play the Kala with a strap. And the fretless option is amazing on a UBass.
Music background: Playing drums for over 40 years, bass for over 30.
Great Build on a Mini Bass
I'm a solo musician and do a lot of looping at my shows. I wanted to add some real bass sound to my loops, but didn't want to bring a full-size bass with me to my gigs. I found this mini fretless, and it is a great little instrument. The size is perfect, and it feels really good to play. It is tough to get the right notes, but that mostly has to do with me not playing a fretless very often. This is a great, solid bass, and I'm also thinking of getting a fretted version.
