Advanced Compression with Dual Crossover Technology

Sweetwater is excited to introduce the Phil Jones Bass X2C multifunctional dual-band compressor pedal to bassists craving an advanced compressor design. This powerful pedal gets its name from its dual compressor technology that divides the signal into high and low frequency bands. Bassists can then tweak the tone corresponding to either band, equating to massive control within the pedal itself. Next, the input jacks on each band allow users to plug in other effects in the signal chain to cultivate completely custom tones. What’s more, the Phil Jones Bass X2C compressor can function as an electronic crossover that’s superbly suited to drive 2-way bass rigs. The Phil Jones Bass X2C is primed for exceptional clarity and dynamics as you refine your tone!

Highly nuanced and controllable

The Phil Jones Bass X2C multifunctional dual-band compressor pedal outputs a natural and transparent sound and packs in more sonic flexibility than a standard single-band compressor. Instead of affecting the entirety of the frequency spectrum with a single tone tweak, bassists can delegate specific adjustments to certain frequency bands instead, leaving the others untouched. Sometimes compression can go a little overboard, but with the X2C, bassists can choose to apply compression to only the low end so that the midrange frequencies carry the attack of the sound. Consistent low-end levels with dynamic midrange: now that’s a stellar sound!

In fact, the Phil Jones Bass X2C is highly useful for slap techniques by dividing the audio spectrum into fundamental frequencies and harmonics. When slapping, the X2C can tailor the low frequencies without changing the dynamics of the slap. By doctoring these low frequency dynamics, the amp can sound louder without hitting overload, and the low band can be compressed without changes to the harmonic character. Lastly, users can route the send jacks to different speakers/amplifiers to achieve a bi-amplification set up!

Vast sonic sculpting via insert jacks

More than just a compressor pedal, the X2C can open up new worlds of sonic exploration. For instance, bassists looking to create their sonic signature will find it easy to achieve a unique tone by using effects pedals with the X2C. Plug them in via the insert jacks and control them separately. Some bassists at Sweetwater have used an overdrive pedal on the low frequencies and a chorus on the high frequencies. The options are virtually unlimited!

PJB
Great unit.
The best part is that you can use all the outputs individually at the same time.
This allows to split your signal between two amps and still have another signal path to process. The advantage is getting the high frequencies to compress more to pump and snap a little while having a more delicate dedicated compressor to tighten up the low end. Having the variable crossover and balance controls makes this a valuable tool, especially for dealing with challenging room dynamics. This is damned good engineering. Thanks Phil!

the "finishing tool" I've been waiting for
I get a lot of people feel intimidated by all the knobs and i/o. But apart from designs like the Keeley Compressor Mini (which automatically calculates parameters for you based on the amount of compression you want), it's actually not much more complicated than a standard compressor and much, much more versatile.

I use this after my Brimstone XD-2 crossover distortion in a multi-instrument pedalboard rig that allows me to go direct or into amp for guitar, bass, violin, mandolin, synth, etc. The X2C serves as a "finishing compressor" to put final polish on the signal and get the sounds in my head w/less post-processing. Thanks to its i/o, I can use it to run stereo or I can just affect the high/lo bands differently in a mono signal chain.

It's a shame that Brimstone no longer exists. The XD-2 and this X2C are a multi-instrumentalist's dream pairing that can get me just about any foundational sound I need and then some.

The X2C > stereo IR pedal (Digitech CabDryVR) > Digitech stereo pedalboard (Ventura, Nautila, Obscura, Polara, Jamman XT Express). An EQ/boost > XD2 > X2C. I can quickly wire for stereo or mono output.

Perfect for my bass setup
I love this. I am running my bass thru Eden preamp into this Phil Jones cross over. Then feeding the low and high out separetly into the Fender Tone Master effects unit thru two signal paths. There I add switchable chorus and multiple reverbs in the high path. In the low path I only put octave pitch shifters to make it sound like clean 8 string bass when switched on. Then high and low paths are summed back together in the Fender Tonemaster and run thru boost switch and volume pedal to montitor and PA. The resulting bass sound is incredible!
