The Rig of Doom — in a Single Pedal!

Thanks to the Catalinbread Sabbra Cadabra Overdrive Pedal, the voice of darkness has never sounded so good. It's basically a Rangemaster-based treble booster that's custom-tuned and paired with a Laney Supergroup's preamp section. The offspring of this union is as gnarly in pedal form as it was as the foundation of Tony Iommi's original setup. The design of the Sabbra Cadabra will take your tone to the dark side all on its own, but you get Presence, Gain, Volume 4 (named after the album), and Range controls for fine-tuning and shaping your sound further.

Range: the key to the kingdom

Gain, Presence, and Volume 4 are all important controls in shaping your sound, but it's the Sabbra's Range knob that provides the greatest diversity in tone. With it, you can mod the treble-boost section of the circuit, ending up anywhere from dedicated treble boost to full-range boost. The Range control is continuously variable to match whatever response range or vibe you're going for, so don't be afraid to experiment. And don't forget the impact your guitar's onboard controls will have on the sound. The Sabbra Cadabra, like most Catalinbread pedals, is engineered to take full advantage of your guitar's pots and pickup selector and let you rule new realms of creativity.

Catalinbread: gear that makes you want to play

The self-avowed gearheads at Catalinbread focus on making musical devices they want to use — “gear that gets us excited and inspires us to play.” The result of that authentic focus and unwavering integrity is the type of innovation that isn’t market-driven; Catalinbread creates its own market for products players love, whether overdrive, delay/reverb, fuzz/distortion, or tremolo/modulation pedals (many of which are available at Sweetwater). The Sabbra Cadabra Overdrive Pedal is a powerful example of Catalinbread's commitment to exciting, inspiring innovation.

Catalinbread Sabbra Cadabra Features:

  • Based on Tony Iommi's modded Rangemaster treble boost fed into Laney Supergroup amps
  • Transforms your setup into the "rig of doom" — even at eardrum-friendly volumes
  • Range control lets you choose frequency response from treble-only boost to full-range boost
  • All-metal chassis and high-quality true-bypass footswitch for long-lasting performance
  • Powered by 9V–18V power supply (not included)

Reviews

Sabbra Cadabra
This little box really gets the job done!
Another great product from Catlinbread.
As been stated by many, this pedal faithfully reproduces the Sabbath/Iommi vibe and vintage metal tone.
I see some comments complaining the pedal is not very versatile. That's not why you would get it.
It is designed to capture a very specific tone quality.
I like that you don't need to do a lot of tweeking to get your desired tone. Pretty much set it and forget it, maybe with a slight fine tuning depending on the guitar you would be playing.
I have been able to use the pedal with a Statacastor HSS,, Gibson p90's and humbuckers. The results are all amazing with a character all their own.

This is “the” pedal!
When it's time to sound like Tony Iommi, this is him in a small box. They reproduced him perfectly.

Pedal was everything i hoped it would be
Ive never felt compelled to write a review before, and ive probably owned about 50 different guitar pedals. I watched reviews of this pedal on youtube and was really not impressed, and i watched quite a few. But at the end of the day, I am a huge Black Sabbath fan so i decided to just buy it anyways, so i can try it myself and sell it if i dont like it. my immediate reaction to plugging my guitar in was "holy crap thats loud, and sounded very treble-y", and that doesnt really fit my playing much (psychedelic/ classic rock player) i tried everything and couldnt get my sound. So I started playing with my pickup settings, volume on the guitar, and tone knob (2021 american tele pro 2) and that was when i fell in love. for my playing, this pedal is perfect when i turn the tone all the way down, roll back the volume knob just alittle, and i usually play it with both pickups singing, and for leads ill maybe swap to the bridge pickup. i did find that the tone is a little lackluster when using my neck pickup, but playing around with the tone knob youll still be able to find a sweet spot. for me this has become a "set it and forget it" type pedal, I really like it at at about 55% presense, 55% tone, 25% volume (it goes insanely loud) and usually i have the rangemaster set around 65%, sometimes ill adjust that, but not too often. It seems to respond so much better to the guitars controls that it absolutely seems to be the best way to use this pedal. Also, it definitely seems to sound its best when its the only pedal on. i have other OD's, Fuzz, Muffs, and it didnt seem to play nice with them. sounds amazing with my morley double wah, my phasers, flangers, reverb. i even use a bassballs bass envelope filter with it on my guitar for some realllly cool effects. This is an amazing pedal that doesnt really seem to get much love, and the people in the video reviews are only really showing what the pedal can do, not how to make it sound good. if you are in a situation like i was where you are on the fence, do it. you wont regret it.

That Classic Iommi Sound
I bought this pedal as I wanted that icon Tony Iommi sound at bedroom volumes, and it delivers on all fronts. It's not the most versatile pedal you'll ever own, but let's be honest that is not what you want from this. The Range knob really unlocks some fun - it mimics the treble boost that Tony Iommi used in his rig. All in all, couldn't be happier with it.

I went with the standard edition so I could read the labels on the knobs, but I must say the artwork on the clearwell edition is quite fetching.

Classic Metal Tones
I love how perfectly this pedal nails Sabbath tones but it can get some pretty great heavy tones reminiscent of Entombed's Left Hand Path.
