D'Addario Electric Guitar Strings

A Closer Look at D’Addario Electric Guitar Strings

D’Addario may not have invented the electric guitar. But as pioneers of the nickel-plated-steel roundwound string, D’Addario’s electric guitar strings have had as much impact on jazz guitar and rock ’n’ roll as the vacuum tube and magnetic pickup.

Today, D’Addario stands as one of the world’s largest and longest-standing string manufacturers. Each day, the D’Addario family and their employees turn out hundreds of thousands of strings from their New York plant, all drawn, plated, wound, and packaged in-house to ensure an exceptional level of quality control and consistency. From the bold punch of NYXL to the mellow warmth of XL Chromes, explore the full lineup and find the right set for your sound.

How to Choose D’Addario Strings for Electric Guitar

Choosing the right strings boils down to four key factors: gauge, material, wrap winding, and coating.

String gauge

• Lighter gauges (9-42) are easier to bend and more forgiving on the fingers.
• Medium gauges (10-46) balance slinkiness in the hand with a consistent tune and even tone.
• Heavier gauges (11-49+) offer greater sustain and tuning stability and are favored by players who use lower tunings, prefer a stiffer feel, or play short-scale electrics.

Material

• Nickel-plated steel is the standard for electric strings. It produces a bright, balanced sound that works across genres.
• Pure nickel harks back to vintage string construction, producing a rounder tone and softer treble bite that’s popular among blues and jazz guitarists.
• Stainless steel offers greater presence and bite, but it can take a toll on traditional nickel frets.

Wrap winding

• Roundwound strings are the standard. These have the familiar textured feel and bright sound D’Addario electric strings are famous for.
• Flatwounds have a smooth texture and mellower sound that’s great for taming finger squeak and making fresh strings sound “lived-in.”
• Half-rounds split the difference, offering a moderately smooth texture while retaining more brightness and attack than a flatwound.

String coating

Coated strings like D’Addario’s XS and XT lines add a protective layer to extend string life, which we break down in our FAQ below.

Head to Head: Ranking D’Addario Electric Guitar String Series by Tone and Lifespan

D’Addario NYXL

Built with D’Addario’s high-carbon NY Steel core, NYXL strings deliver bold midrange presence and exceptional tuning stability right out of the package. Players consistently praise them for staying in tune with minimal settling-in time.

D’Addario XS

XS is D’Addario’s premium coated string, featuring an ultrathin polymer coating over the entire string for maximum lifespan, a smooth feel, and virtually no finger noise. Built for players who want fewer string changes while preserving the brightness and clarity of an uncoated string.

D’Addario XT

XT strings treat the wrap wire only, extending string life while keeping a natural, traditional feel under your fingers. They’re the successor to D’Addario’s EXP line and a practical choice for gigging musicians, players in humid climates, or anyone who wants more time between changes without a coated-string feel.

D’Addario XL Nickel Wound

D’Addario’s most popular electric string, favored by guitar legends like Joe Satriani. Made with nickel-plated steel wrap wire around a high-carbon steel hexagonal core, they deliver a bright, versatile tone that works across virtually every style. The lineup also includes specialty options such as wound 3rd, 12-string, and baritone sets.

D’Addario Pure Nickel

XL Pure Nickel strings use the same pure nickel wrap wire popular in the ’50s and ’60s, reviving the rich, warm sound of early blues and rock. They deliver a vintage-inspired tone with a pronounced midrange and softer treble, and pair exceptionally well with lower-output pickups.

D’Addario XL Chromes

XL Chromes are D’Addario’s flatwound electric strings, built with flattened stainless-steel wrap wire for an ultrasmooth feel and warm, mellow tone with focused clarity. A go-to for jazz and blues players everywhere, including Gary Clark Jr., and a standout in recording sessions where finger noise needs to stay out of the mix.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between XS and XT coated strings?

XT strings treat the wrap wire only, protecting against corrosion while maintaining a traditional, natural feel. XS strings take it further with an ultrathin polymer coating over the entire string, including the plain steels, for a noticeably smoother feel, virtually no finger noise, and the longest lifespan in D’Addario’s lineup.

Sweetwater’s advice? Choose XS for maximum lifespan and the smoothest feel. Choose XT for extended life with a more traditional feel.

Are NYXL strings worth it?

NYXLs are built with a high-carbon NY Steel core that resists breakage and holds tuning remarkably well, even right out of the package. Their enhanced midrange presence gives them a bold, articulate sound that has earned a loyal following among gigging and recording guitarists.

Do coated strings affect tone?

D’Addario’s coatings are engineered to be ultrathin, and both XS and XT strings are designed to preserve the natural brightness and response of uncoated strings. Many players find the tonal tradeoff negligible compared to the gain in lifespan.

Which D’Addario strings last the longest?

XS strings offer the longest lifespan in D’Addario’s electric lineup, followed by XT. For a quick comparison across all series, see the chart above.
