Two Classic FET Compressors in One!

The Serpent Splice MKII takes classic FET compression to a whole new level, faithfully re-creating the circuitry, sonics, and behavior of not one, but two renowned FET compressors. The Splice MKII’s unique mode switching lets you switch between legendary Black Panel and Blue Stripe circuits with the press of a button. The Splice MKII can even mix and match the two for entirely new sounds — a unique feature that really caught our attention at Sweetwater.

Mode switching

The Splice MKII audio path consists of two sections: the Input amplifier circuitry and the Output amplifier circuitry. Serpent's unique circuitry mode switching lets you switch the audio path circuitry between classic Black Panel and Blue Stripe modes — or mix and match between the two. When both Input and Output mode LEDs are off, the Splice is configured for classic FET compression. When both Input and Output mode LEDs are illuminated (Blue), the unit is configured for Blue Stripe mode. Alternatively, you can also mix and match by engaging the Blue Stripe circuit on only the Input and Output paths to create new sounds and behaviors unique to the Splice MKII.

Slam mode

Individually, the Splice MKII's selectable ratios of 2:1, 4:1, 8:1, 12:1, and 20:1 deliver everything from mild compression to brickwall limiting. But the onboard sonic surprise is Slam mode, which approximates the infamous "All Buttons In" setting on the classic vintage FET compressor that inspired the Splice. Deployed on the right source — drum room mics, for instance — the so-called Slam mode can trigger warped, explosive results akin to a seismic event in your control room. Symptoms may include increased distortion, a plateaued slope on initial transients, and extended lag time — kind of like a fun-house mirror for audio. At Sweetwater, we know of few other processors that can brutalize your signal quite so delightfully.

Four compressor circuits in one:

  • Input circuit Black + Output circuit Black = classic mode
  • Input Blue + Output Blue = classic Blue Stripe mode
  • Input Black + Output Blue = “BlackStripe” mode (unique to the Splice)
  • Input Blue + Output Black = “BlueFace” mode (unique to the Splice)

Reviews

2 Great Sounding Compressors in 1 Box
The Splice is wonderful recreation of both the Blue Stripe (Type A) and Type E comps.
Blue Stripe setting is superb for lead vocals, bass DI, and a variety of lead sources. Type E setting sounds great on everything else.
Serpent's addition of additional ratios (2:1 especially), mix knob, and lowpass sidechain controls make the Splice extremely versatile.

I use mine every day, on a variety of sources, with a variety of different mics and preamps. Instant vibe on digital sources too!

Bass Compression
This is my first studio compressor and as a bass player I love it. For example, a 5 string bass with passive soapbars,I can get punchy and loud with this bad boy. I can get mean and dirty or slightly dirty that thumps beautifully. I find blue input and blue output loud and mean. I find black input and blue output meet with smooth compression. I push it and then I don't. This compressor is currently working through a Phoenix Audio Ascent EQ and through a Aguilar Tone Hammer 350. I have not tried the Splice with a guitar yet, but I will.
Awesome
One of the 2 best 1176's in the market (the other one is Purple Audio MC 77)
Two units is a charm
I tried not to buy the real UA 1176 as everyone said it's not up there with clones and Ureis for the sound. After research ordered this unit, two versions in a box, and all the features. Sounded incredible, and all features worked fine, but, after 2 minutes an incredible HUM ruined the experience.
Back it went and a brand new unit arrived, Great!
Plugged it in, fantastic sound, Blue is my favorite and.... after 5 minutes the Input Know stop attenuating so I lost vol control and there is no threshold now.
Frustrating you may ask. Indeed. I read that this Manufacturer is obsessed with perfection and that is a high quality build, well....
I know thing happen, but at this level of Gear, two faulty units from a clone manufacturer guided me to purchase the Real UA 1176LN, enough said, not looking back. and the sound is there in spades. Good luck with this unit, I rather do Music with reliable true and proved staple studio gear like UA. Thanks.
