Neve’s VCA Desktop Dynamo

Introduced in the 1970s, Neve VCA compressors revolutionized the industry with their unparalleled precision and versatility. Going forward, these proprietary technologies became a hallmark of Neve consoles, culminating in the legendary VR and 88R series boards found in today’s world-class studios. Now, the same engineering wizardry that breathed life into these iconic designs has birthed the 88C Dual Desktop Dynamics unit, a groundbreaking USB bus-powered compressor/limiter that brings signature Neve console sound and dynamics control to every studio in a compact, affordable package that’s perfect for tracking, mixing, and mastering.

The best of both worlds

VCA compressors are generally valued for their speed and ability to deliver competent dynamics control, sometimes at the expense of musicality and warmth. Equipped with adaptive attack, release, and ratio settings, the Neve 88C provides ultra-precise control over transient response and overall dynamics, making it ideal for any studio application or music genre. Conveying the distinctive sonic character of the 88R console dynamics section, the 88C is designed to preserve the natural musicality of your recordings, smoothly rendering signals with enhanced warmth, clarity, and punch.

Rock-solid build quality

Essentially a reimagining of the iconic 88R dynamics section in a compact, dual-channel desktop format, the 88C makes legendary Neve console sound and professional dynamics control available to small home and project studios. Bus-powered via USB-C, the 88C seamlessly integrates into your DAW-based workflow. Diligently crafted in the UK by Neve’s preeminent engineering team and assembled in Burnley headquarters alongside 88R consoles, the 88C boasts the company’s renowned build quality and will serve you well for decades.

"A powerful standalone compressor for any studio"

“The 88RS console channel strip compressor is simply the greatest sounding dynamics processor I've ever had the pleasure of working with. However, due to the nature of the two-ton premier studio console, 88R analog circuitry is simply out of reach for a huge number of Neve-aspiring producers. We’re extremely proud to bring the 88R technology to the desktop format and have designed the 88C to be the ideal compressor for the immensely successful 88M, as well as a powerful standalone compressor for any studio.” — Neve Product Specialist Joe Heaton

The sound that changed music forever

At Sweetwater, the name Neve commands reverence. Rupert Neve started designing audio equipment in the tube console era but made his mark with solid-state designs. Setting up shop in Little Shelford in the ’60s, Mr. Neve faced many obstacles in establishing his brand amid a new technological landscape. Transistors were new, expensive, and difficult to obtain in quantity in the UK. Reliable faders didn’t exist yet — a far cry from today’s world, where parts are affordable and readily available from multiple suppliers, all competing to win bids. Nevertheless, Rupert persisted. And by the early 1970s, the Neve company was humming along, taking orders and building custom transformer-balanced consoles for recording and broadcast studios the world over.

Neve: the legend continues

Neve 80-series consoles had a huge, punchy, and authoritative sound that defined the sound of ’70s rock. From London to New York to Los Angeles and beyond, top studios were installing Neve desks as fast as they could. By 1978, with the introduction of the majestic 8078 — the pinnacle of handwired analog “production” consoles — and NECAM automation system, Neve boards were the main component of the success formula for any recording studio with world-class aspirations. In the decades since, Neve has innovated with groundbreaking products such as the VR, VX, and 88R series consoles. Today, the company continues to advance the state of the art with cutting-edge pro audio gear that sounds incredible and intelligently addresses the challenges of the digital age.

Reviews

I Love My 88c!
I needed a stereo compressor, preferably a VCA, for various jobs in the studio and was looking for the channels to be able to be used both as dual mono as well as stereo. I also didn't want to have to redo one of my racks to accomodate a new comp. Enter the 88c.

I love the form factor. It sits in a perfect spot on my mixing desk and because it's powered by USB there's no need to find an extra plug.

Soundwise, this thing is amazing! I've tracked guitars, bass and vocals through it as well as using it on the 2-bus as a glue compressor. It excells at every task.

It can be transparent and gentle as well as very aggressive and imparts a depth and denseness to everything I throw at it.

Don't let the novelties of the 88c, such as its size and USB power supply, disuade you from grabbing this comp. The convenience, versatility and sound quality make it well worth the price.

Robust and Sounds Great
This is a really really good comp. It is very forgiving and keeps the integrity of a great recording while sounding smooth or aggressive if you dial it in. It never loses its grip on the music but lets it breath when needed. I highly recommend this device over any plugin and also if you need a great vocal BG comp. It also works well on Kick and snare separately. The push button knobs are truly amazing in action when you get deep into a mix and can make a huge difference in how it sounds. Each turn of the knob makes a difference. just not enough reviews on this unit which is unfortunate. Neve could do a better job pushing this thing.
Music background: R&B singer, Producer, Engineer.
More than just a great Compressor
I just needed a new limiter to top off the mastering chain in my project studio, but I ended up getting a serious sonic upgrade as well! This thing absolutely levels up the sound you put through it, you can easily hear a difference when you flip the bypass even with no compression.

I've never had the chance to use a "real" console, but I'm pretty sure this gives me "the sound" when space and budget would never allow for the real thing.
