Modern Take on a Legendary Studio Compressor
The AMS Neve 2254/R is an authentic re-creation of one of recording history’s most venerable studio limiter/compressors. Handbuilt in Burnley, England, and featuring the elegant and unmistakably musical Neve sound, the 2254/R is a hardware lover’s dream. It’s packed with four iron-core Neve Marinair specification transformers, a diode-bridge VCA, and a BA283 amp circuit — the same found in Neve’s iconic 1073 preamp. But the AMS Neve 2254/R is more than just a vintage reissue. It features modern updates, including Neve’s Total Recall software and a rack-friendly footprint, that contemporary artists will appreciate. Engineers at Sweetwater attest that it’s the 2254 they’ve always wanted — classic sounding but with modern conveniences! Take your dynamics game to the next level with the unmatched sonics and intuitive workflow of the Neve 2254/R.

Faithful re-creation of the original circuit design
Originally conceived in 1969, the Neve 2254 limiter/compressor was featured on countless hit records throughout the 1970s and beyond. Renowned for its distinctive tone and straightforward operation, the 2254 offers musical dynamic control over every source — from vocals to drum overheads. Based on the 2254/E iteration, AMS Neve’s 2254/R preserves the legendary circuit topology but enhances it with modern updates; for example, a 19-inch 1U footprint, as opposed to the original’s square block design, and recall capabilities with Neve’s proprietary Total Recall software via USB.
Logical and intuitive controls to inspire creativity
One of the most appealing aspects of the Neve 2254 is its straightforward and intuitive feature set, which lets you dial up the perfect setting in an instant. The 2254/R comprises a limiter and compressor that can be used independently or in series. The brickwall-style limiter is ideal for preventing clipping while tracking and for reigning in harsh transients during mixdown; it includes variable recovery times (stepped at 100ms, 200ms, and 800ms), along with an AUTO mode, which adjusts the recovery time according to the source audio. Additionally, the limiter section features a fixed 5ms default slow attack and an optional fast attack mode, with continuously variable attack speeds between 100ms and 2ms. The 2254/R’s compressor section includes a ratio control with five settings (1.5:1. 2:1, 3:1, 4:1, and 6:1), a –20dB to +10dB threshold control, gain makeup, and recovery control with 400ms, 800ms, 1.5s, and AUTO settings. Whether you’re looking to subtly shape the dynamics of a track or aggressively smash them for colorful, pumping compression, the AMS Neve 2254/R has you covered.

Save your settings with Neve Total Recall
A welcome technological upgrade, the AMS Neve 2254/R’s Neve Total Recall capabilities allow you to save, load, and manage your favorite presets. This means you can easily audition multiple settings, saving each for accurate A/B comparisons, and then build a catalog of go-to presets to speed up your workflow. Accessed via USB, the Neve Total Recall software comes bundled with the hardware. The software doesn’t take physical control over the unit, but it does accurately capture settings and provide you with visual feedback to ensure the unit’s real-world knob positions match the stored settings. Essentially, the Neve Total Recall software offers the convenience of plug-ins combined with the unmatched sound of hardware.
The legend continues
At Sweetwater, the name Neve commands reverence. Rupert Neve started designing audio equipment in the tube console era but made his mark with solid-state designs. Setting up shop in Little Shelford in the ’60s, Mr. Neve faced many obstacles establishing his brand amid a new technological landscape. Transistors were new, expensive, and difficult to obtain in quantity in the UK. Reliable faders didn’t exist yet — a far cry from today’s world, where parts are affordable and readily available from multiple suppliers, all competing to win bids. Nevertheless, Rupert persisted. And by the early 1970s, the Neve company was humming along, taking orders and building custom transformer-balanced consoles for recording and broadcast studios the world over.
Neve 80 series consoles had a huge, punchy, and authoritative sound that defined the sound of ’70s rock. From London to New York to Los Angeles and beyond, top studios were installing Neve desks as fast as they could. By 1978, with the introduction of the majestic 8078 — the pinnacle of handwired analog “production” consoles — and NECAM automation system, Neve boards were the main component of the success formula for any recording studio with world-class aspirations. In the decades since, AMS Neve has innovated with groundbreaking products such as the VR, VX, and 88R series consoles. And today, the company continues to advance the state of the art with cutting-edge pro audio gear that sounds incredible and intelligently addresses the challenges of the digital age.
