The Reverbs That Defined a Generation of Gamers

This article was Written By

Our Product Research Team

Get to know them!

The reverbs of the SNES, N64, and PS1 aren't technical footnotes; they're practically half the sound of those consoles, as recognizable as the music itself. GameVerb re-creates all three as exact algorithmic implementations of the hardware composers actually used: the SNES's delay-line and 8-tap FIR filter, the N64's software-defined reverb in both its delay-line and comb-filter forms, and all nine original PS1 DSP algorithms with the same parameter controls that period programmers actually had. With over 760 presets sourced from real game cues, a faithful re-creation of the SNES SPC700's Bit Rate Reduction (BRR) bitcrusher available globally across all 3 engines, and deep editing modes that let you dial in raw FIR coefficients or per-comb filter parameters by hand, GameVerb offers as much depth as you desire. These aren't approximations of iconic sounds; they're the exact reverbs that shaped a generation of game soundtracks, now running natively in your DAW.

GameVerb-exclusive N64 mode

Unlike the SNES and PS1, the Nintendo 64 had no dedicated audio chip; reverb was implemented entirely in software via Nintendo's SDK, giving developers a tool kit of building blocks rather than a fixed set of algorithms. In practice this produced two distinct approaches: a delay-line-style reverb (Mode 1) used predominantly by first-party Nintendo titles like Super Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, and Mario Kart 64, and a comb-filter-style reverb (Mode 2) favored by 2nd- and 3rd-party developers, including Rare's classic N64 catalog (Banjo-Kazooie, GoldenEye 007, and Donkey Kong 64) and Hudson Soft's Mario Party series. GameVerb re-creates both with over 160 presets sourced from actual N64 game cues, and it also adds a third mode exclusive to GameVerb called Mode 1→2, which feeds the delay-line output of Mode 1 directly into the comb filters of Mode 2. This combination has roots in authentic N64 architecture, but no N64 composer ever had access to it — until now.

Impact Soundworks: load, play, and score

Founded in 2008 by two composers specializing in electronic music and video game soundtracks, Impact Soundworks creates user-friendly virtual instruments and plugins intended to both perform and inspire. The company’s vast array of accessible libraries is built around a simple idea: the best virtual tools are those you can load, play, and trust without spending ample time tweaking before pressing record. This philosophy appears in each product — whether it's a virtual guitar that sits in a mix just like the real thing, strings that respond like an actual ensemble, or a retro synth that nails the vibe before you've even touched a preset. Sweetwater recommends Impact Soundworks products to both professional composers and hobbyists alike for use in film, television, and games when they need a wide range of no-fuss, high-quality sounds.

Impact Soundworks GameVerb Features:

  • Exact algorithmic re-creations of the reverb engines from 3 beloved gaming consoles: the SNES, N64, and PS1
  • 760+ presets sourced directly from real game cues, featuring searchable preset menus with multi-language support and duplicate filtering
  • SNES delay-line and 8-tap FIR filter with 600+ presets organized by game title, cue name, and filter type
  • SNES Geek Mode: direct FIR coefficient editing with harmonic analysis graph lets you create SNES reverbs beyond the preset library
  • 2 N64 reverb modes, plus a GameVerb-exclusive mode that runs each classic mode in series
  • N64 Geek Mode: per-comb editing across up to 16 taps lets you re-create any N64 Mode 2 reverb or design your own from scratch, with per-comb LFO assignment for expressive pitch modulation
  • All 9 original PS1 DSP algorithms with the exact Size, Feedback, Damping, and Width controls that were available to actual PS1 audio programmers
  • BRR bitcrusher available globally across all 3 engines, with standalone bypass option for using GameVerb as a bitcrushing FX box
  • 4 global sample rate options let you dial in authentic hardware-accurate lo-fi character with anti-aliasing filter to control harshness, or bypass both for full-bandwidth processing
  • Pre and Post LPF knobs for independent tonal shaping before and after reverb processing, giving you precise control over your reverb sound
  • A/B switching for instant comparison of 2 settings, with full DAW automation support for console mode, reverb controls, and global bypass
  • Dry and Wet knobs with Link mode for fast, intuitive mix balancing, and Lock mode to preserve your mix settings while browsing presets
