Versatile, Mobile-ready 4-channel Interface

Roland's Rubix 44 is a versatile 4-channel USB audio interface that lets you record clean and clear audio, even in less than ideal environments. That's because Roland built this interface to be as mobile as possible. A sturdy metal housing lets you toss your Rubix 44 in your bag and go, and since it communicates via class-compliant USB, you can leave your laptop at home and track right on your iPad. Four microphone preamps offer the kind of clarity you don't normally find on such an affordable interface, and bonus features such as a ground lift and onboard dynamics processing make it easy to capture high-quality audio wherever you go.

Low-noise performance from the ground up

When it comes to fighting noise, the Rubix 44 starts off with a pair of microphone preamps that go hand in hand with its extensively shielded construction. These passive noise-reduction methods work great in most cases, but sometimes bad power can ruin your day. Roland addressed this issue by outfitting the Rubix 44 with a system-wide ground-lift switch, so you can cut off any hum coming from the power supply. That's something Sweetwater recording engineers have rarely, if ever, seen on an audio interface, and it's extremely useful for recording live sound.

Onboard dynamics save time and your tracks

Ask any seasoned engineer/producer, and they'll tell you that getting the best possible sound on the way in will save you hours of editing when it's time to mix. One of the easiest ways to improve your incoming audio is by adding a touch of compression on the front side to keep your levels smooth. That usually requires outboard compressors to pull off, but Roland equipped the Rubix 44 with a pair of 3-mode compressor/limiter circuits for each set of stereo inputs. These dynamics circuits feature two gentle compression types plus a more aggressive limiter — something you'll appreciate if you track live sound, where unexpected spikes can obliterate your audio quality.

Cool bonus features offer added versatility

Between its class-compliant USB, robust design, and low-noise performance options, it's clear that Roland intended for the Rubix 44 to be a great mobile audio interface, but it has some tricks up its sleeve that also make it a wonderful start or addition to your home studio. First off, it comes with a 6-month membership to Roland Cloud Pro. MIDI I/O also adds compatibility with keyboards, controllers, and other devices. Selectable headphone output sources let you create a separate monitor mix for recording, which is a real bonus if you collaborate with other artists. Loopback recording lets you record output sources from your computer, which is particularly handy for podcasting and similar applications.

Reviews

Couldn't be happier with the Roland Rubix 44!
Having used a few other competitors USB audio interfaces (Focusrite, MOTU, ...), I've got to say this Roland Rubix 44 beats them all hands down. Better preamps/DACs and overall dead quiet compared to the others mentioned. Lowest latency of the bunch. It sounds warm, open and punchy and the additional compressor(s)/limiter options are just icing on the cake. Typical of Roland, these units are built like a tank, which is an issue with other brands. An extremely well thought out product and was simple to implement. Quickly and easily integrated to work with both my Windows 10 PC and Mac DAW systems with zero issues. Frankly surprised that these Roland Rubix interfaces haven't been discovered by more serious users. Highly recommended!!

Quality interface
Nice heavy solid construction. Operation and signal lights are well positioned for maximum visibility. This unit seems to get bad reviews for sound quality but I have no complaints. Crystal clear without hiss or latency. I have a few other Roland products and I've come to trust in their quality.

Incredible step up from the Rubix22
I had a Rubix22 interface which served me very well for 6 years. It was a tough unit, but one of the inputs finally died—I put it through the wringer!—so I decided to replace it with the Rubix44.

The Rubix44 is a perfect step up. Very little setup time to get it up and running with my existing projects in Logic and Ableton Live. The onboard compressors are nice to have, but I don't need them because I prefer to use my compressor plug-ins.

What I appreciate the most about the 44 is that the two sets of inputs (1 & 2 together, and 3 & 4 together) have separate Hi-Z and 48V phantom power toggle buttons. Direct monitor controls with mono toggles on the front panel are a huge plus.

Roland's Rubix series interfaces are seriously overlooked. Get one!
Roland Rubix 44
For years I've used the Roland Quad Capture and it did an excellent job for me. But I needed more inputs and decided to go with the Rubix 44 after reading reviews about several interfaces. I couldn't be happier with this interface. Once again, Roland produces another outstanding product - - maybe that's why my small music studio is practically all Roland.
Exactly what I needed
I had avoided using USB audio interfaces because they had a reputation of being less reliable than Firewire or Thunderbolt interfaces. But I had recently changed the bulk of my recording platfrom from MacOS to Linux, and there is little manufacturer support out there for Linux. But the Rubix 44 is a Class Compliant USB device, which is supported under Linux, so I gave it a try. Works perfectly out of the box. The build quality is good. The latency is better on both Linux and MacOS than my old Firewire interface. The built in outboard compression is a real bonus. I can set it up as a limiter just to catch an unexpected peak and save a take. So far, I'm very happy with this thing.

Simply put, modern electronic music wouldn't exist without Roland. Many of the electronic musicians here at Sweetwater cut our teeth on TR Rhythm machines and fondly remember programming our first TB-303s. We owe a good part of our careers to this amazing and innovative company. It's been fun to watch and grow right alongside Roland, as they've introduced wave after wave of revolutionary keyboards, digital pianos, and more. For example, Roland's V-Drum Kits continuously redefine the possibilities of electronic drums, beginning with SuperNATURAL technology to the latest Prismatic Sound Modeling. We're huge fans, and we'd love to tell you all about them. Whether you want a pocket-sized synth or a cutting-edge video mixer, if Roland makes it, then Sweetwater is 100% behind it.
