Reviews

Excellent Pair
For anyone just getting into music recording/mixing, I simply cannot recommend a better starting setup than this mic/interface combo. I upgraded to this a couple of years ago (2017) and will not be looking back. I'm convinced that I got the best overall value per dollar available when I purchased this bundle. Here's my subjective reasoning why:

THE MIC: I've used lots of sub-$300 condenser mics from CAD, MXL, Shure, AudioTechnica, AKG, sE Electronics, Behringer, Rode; and this little AKG P420 does the trick nicely for just about everything. It's not my favorite mic ever; it won't be my "best mic ever"; and it doesn't sound like a $1,500 Neumann. But when you're starting out you don't need it to be the word's best. You need a good, clean, usable signal from every source, and for that the P420 is definitely up to the challenge and will deliver. I've never regretted reaching for this mic in any recording session, and I don't think I will. It's clean, and refreshingly less "brittle" in the higher frequencies than any $100 or less mic I've ever used. All-in-all, the P420 will always be a mic that I'll be glad to have around. It is currently my "quick, get a demo track of that" mic because I know I'll have a decent reference point for whatever it is I'm recording.

THE INTERFACE: The best interface for you is the one you like the best. Period. It's just like shopping for an instrument. You pick the one you like the sound and feel of the most. So pick the interface that sounds the best and suits your I/O needs and workflow the best and be done with the choice. For me, the choice is very easily the Audient iD range. I think Audient smashed the performance & feature to price ratio. The mic preamps and AD/DA converters are just spectacular - I can't believe this sound is available in this price range! Also, I really don't have any trouble with the USB device drivers for this interface. That can really be a big deal if you've never worked with an interface before. Superb product from Audient!

OVERALL: While you may likely outgrow the P420 in the studio and need to eventually expand your mic locker, I doubt a home studio setup would ever outgrow the sound quality of the Audient iD14 (or iD4, iD44, whatever your I/O needs demand). And since the P420 is already a really good mic, you can start out knowing that you are working with excellent, top-quality gear. The rest is up to you and refining your skill through practice. If you can't get a good sound with this setup, you honestly just need a lot more experience (like me). I know these are my opinions, but all reviews are just opinions. I'd recommend this to anyone. Enjoy making music!!

An EXCELLENT Deal!
Kudos to Sweetwater for offering these two items together in this well-valued bundle. Those who are put off by the iD14 base price should have no qualms about springing for this bundle, as the composite prices of the Audient and the mic as offered as a package in this bundle are WELL WORTH IT! The Audient is extremely well-built, has superlative mic pres, has two balanced inputs as well as optical in and line in, and turns out to be perfect for my needs. WORKS WELL IN PRO-TOOLS 11! The mic is a bonus, in a nice case, well regarded for a variety of applications. All said? BUY IT! I did, and it was very promptly delivered in two separate packages. Phil Schwann and the whole staff at Sweetwater added to the value with expert assistance and unvarnished first-hand impressions.
