Audio Alchemy for Your Pedalboard!

The talented folks at Empress Effects have established themselves as a force to be reckoned with, and the company's collective expertise is on full display with the ZOIA pedal. This versatile modular pedal is designed to do, well, just about anything! Reincarnate your pedalboard with over 80 modules that handle everything from audio, MIDI, and CV I/O management to envelope following, waveform generation, granular synthesis, voltage control, and a bevy of effects. This is just scratching the surface. Sweetwater’s synthesists and guitarists are impressed with the boundless versatility of this module, delivering nuanced modification capabilities with a streamlined UI that eschews needless menu diving. Full MIDI control is available via 1/8-inch MIDI, making for easy integration of the ZOIA into any setup.

So much more than a pedal

It’s difficult to overstate just how much the ZOIA has to offer. The onboard oscillator generates a waveform of your choice, with optional parameters for defining frequency and pulse width. Moreover, the ZOIA can be used for creating your own effects, control devices, utility management, CV tool, and more. You’ve got room for 64 total patches to be easily stored and recalled for any stage or studio setting, and an included SD card broadens that access even more. Employ customizable MIDI program changes to seamlessly modify patches on the fly, whether it’s one of the 50-plus ready-made effects or totally custom patches that you design. Quick access buttons streamline live performances by retaining their assigned functions as you change pages with the vibrant OLED screen. Rest assured that you’re never skimping on audio quality, with 48kHz sampling, 24-bit conversion, and 32-bit internal processing.

Reviews

Worth Every Penny
I can not sing the praises for this pedal enough. In my never ending quest to down size my rig I came across many options out there but landed on this great piece of engineering. As a guitarist I must admit that there are better options out there like the Quad Cortex, the Helix, or many other modulars that cater to guitarist perfectly. As a multi-instrumentalist however I wanted something that could do more than just process my guitar signal. With that said if you are a guitarist you will definitely get your money's worth with just the time based effects from empress in this pedal. As a guitar player place this in your amp's fx loop or use it to create a stereo rig. But that is only the tip of the iceberg though! This pedal is a great stand alone synthesizer, sequencer, looper, and pretty much any other thing that you can imagine. Easily the most entertaining pedal I own.
Does quite a lot, very impressive
I expected the learning curve on this to be much longer.. at first look, it appears to be a pretty complex unit. And it IS, but the documentation and YouTube videos are first rate, so its very easy to learn to program it in no time. Easily a Five Star unit, but the GUI is a little small. Its the only thing I can think of where they could have done a better job. Also a big shout out to Jeff Green at Sweetwater. We have worked together since we were both infants. Don't trust the internet boards folks, your sales engineers are the real experts.
Music background: great gear, no talent
Cool pedal
What an amazing piece of gear. It can be a compact pedalboard, pristine wet effects, synth, sampler, drum machine, sequencer, mixer, a clever midi controller, an audio utility box, mono or stereo, mono to stereo, etc. the only limits are IQ, imagination, patience and cpu load.

I went with Zoia for the granular mods, delays, verbs and to try out some user patches but I am stoked to connect some midi controllers and learn the generative side of the hardware and for extra tactile control over parameters. I like being able to download a mood like or tensor like patch instead of shelling out boutique pedal money for effects that all kind of sound similar. Zoia has already done much to keep GAS subdued.

It is definitely a piece of gear that needs to be learned but the ins and outs can be explained by the built in help. Definitely not for folks with bad backs or poor eyesight though. Not a problem for me but I can understand why some people are put off by the ui or why most videos have it sitting on a desk. My one suggestion if there is a Zoia mk2 in R/D is to add rotary push knobs like on the quad cortex so parameters could be mapped to them.
Just beautiful
The learning curve is not nearly as steep as you'd think. The work flow is very intuitive. Had a basic multifx patch done in minutes first time. Made a granular delay by my second night.

Just brings my whole board together. Might we'll be the last serious pedal I buy. Really. It can do everythin!
Amazing!
I was looking for something different. I had been through all of the ambience pedals out there, and was getting bored with the washy spacey reverbs that all sounded similar. Then I came across a few videos on YouTube of the Zoia. Long story short, I decided to try it and I am now hooked. It not only sounds amazing, but it looks amazing and is downright mesmerizing at times. Admittedly, there is a learning curve, but I really don't care. The factory presets alone have been keeping me very busy, and the community have created over 1000 presets which should keep me occupied for about ever. Amazing!
