About Bogner Amps
Reinhold Bogner’s tube titans and reimagined classics shine brighter than ever in Sweetwater’s collection of Bogner guitar amps. Every Bogner amp we stock is meticulously built by Reinhold and his team in sunny California, using the same small-batch principles the brand was founded on.
Are you shopping for your first Bogner amp? Looking to add that final piece to your gear collection? Read on for an overview of the heads and combos offered today, as well as a brief history of how the Bogner name became synonymous with high-performance tube amplifiers.
History of Bogner Amplification
Grassroots beginnings
Reinhold Bogner developed a passion for tube electronics at an early age by repairing German TVs and radios with his father. As a teenager, he became fascinated with guitar amplifiers and began applying his knowledge of tubes by building amps for friends and local musicians. It didn’t take long for Bogner to come to a realization that would guide his career: that when it came to great amp tones, tubes were an essential part of the equation.
Early amp designs
Bogner pieced together his first tube amps using spare parts and schematics from his local music shop. Through trial and error, he learned to adapt his amp designs to suit his own musical tastes and those of the emerging hard rock music market.
Bogner comes to America
In 1989, Reinhold moved to Los Angeles and sought to take his fire-breathing amp designs to the next level by introducing them to A-listers on the Hollywood Sunset Strip. He formed a friendship and partnership with gear dealer Andy Brauer, whom Bogner describes as “the go-to guy for selling and renting old guitars and amplifiers.” This relationship helped put Bogner’s amps in the hands of rising stars like Michael Landau, Steve Stevens, and Jerry Cantrell.
Triple Giant and Fish: The Bogner legacy is born
The first Bogner-branded amp products were the Triple Giant and Fish: rackmount tube preamps designed for refrigerator racks of the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. Word of mouth about the "Bogner sound" rapidly spread throughout the LA guitar scene as more and more guitarists showcased Bogner preamps in their stage and studio racks.
Agony and Ecstasy: Bogner Amplification takes shape
Frustrated by the limited choices available in guitar amps, Bogner set out to do what few amp designers had attempted at that time: to develop a line of amplifiers with a distinct sound for a particular clientele.
This ambition led to the creation of the Bogner Ecstasy in 1992, which quickly became a favorite in the Hollywood hard rock scene due to its pummeling gain and flexible 3-channel switching. The Ecstasy remains one of Bogner’s signature amps today.
Further experimentation with amp designs led to the creation of several key Bogner models, including the genre-defying Shiva in 1999, the unruly Uberschall in 2001, the entry-friendly Alchemist in 2008, the glassy-clean Goldfinger in 2009, and the hot-rodded Helios in 2014.
Bogner’s tube hybrids take the guitar world by storm
In the late 2000s, Bogner entered into a partnership with Line 6 guitar amps. This led to the birth of some criminally underrated tech, beginning with the hybrid tube modeling Spider Valve and culminating in the Line 6 DT Series. These lines represented a new way forward for tube tones by fusing groundbreaking digital modeling and FX with boutique-grade tube horsepower.
The story continues
Bogner guitar amps remain a proud part of the Greater Los Angeles music scene. Their heads, combos, and cabinets are still expertly crafted in the California sunshine at Bogner’s dedicated LA amp factory.
