A Luxurious 12-string with Superior Playability

The Larrivee J-03 12-string jumbo acoustic guitar is an exceptional 12-string that’s crafted with solid tonewoods and flourishes of premium binding. This US-made 12-string features robust mahogany back and sides paired with a moon spruce top and a 1-piece mahogany neck. The jumbo body style’s roaring cannon-like sound lets players achieve sparkling, full-bodied tones with minimal force to help minimize hand and finger strain during long sessions. Plus, with tons of detailed nuance like hardwood binding and an abalone rosette, the J-03 12-string’s craftsmanship calls out even to Sweetwater’s most discerning acoustic players.

Make jumbo advantages yours!

The jumbo style has graced some extremely memorable 12-string acoustic guitars, particularly those used by West Coast musicians during the 1960s and ’70s. This jumbo’s loud definition lights up any room with robust bass and assertive midrange reinforcement. 12-string players at Sweetwater prefer a jumbo like the J-03 for long sessions and gigs. The sensitive response and large sound chamber make even your most gentle strums resonate with full definition, thus warding off overexertion and cramps during long sessions. Strum smarter — not harder — with the J-03 12-string jumbo acoustic guitar!

Prized tonewoods and artisan appointments

The Larrivee J-03 12-string’s tonewoods are rich, articulate, and suitable for almost any situation that calls for a 12-string. Mahogany back and sides give the J-03 exceptional midrange that’s balanced and dynamic with rich overtones that help those extra octaves sparkle as they should. The J-03’s deluxe moon spruce top and moon spruce bracing add more flavor to the mix. Moon spruce is incredibly lightweight because it’s harvested only at high altitudes when sap levels are at seasonal lows, thus ensuring vibrant resonance and impeccable tones. The 1-piece mahogany neck has a smooth satin feel for easy fretwork up and down the neck, with a comfortable carve that sits between popular “C” and “D” neck profiles. What’s more, the J-03 body is bound with rosewood, while solid maple frames the ebony fingerboard for a luxurious look that checks every box.

Enchanté Larrivee

Founded in 1967 in Canada, Larrivee honed their vision and craft among the sitka spruce forests of Vancouver. Eventually, the company moved not overseas but to California, where Larrivee still crafts guitars that emphasize fine tonewoods and premium aesthetics at player-friendly prices. Goals like “affordable luxury” and ethically sourced wood are anchored in real-world action like how Larrivee relies on ethically sourced FSC woods. Their passion and appreciation for our forestry's natural beauty let players like you responsibly add pieces of nature to your life in the form of a guitar.

Reviews

Larrivee J-03-MH
If you are looking for a high-quality, American-Made, and easy to play acoustic guitar at a reasonable price, check out Larrivee (Canadian-Born, California-Based). I was looking for a replacement 12-string for my very nice Japanese Spruce/Maple Jumbo that was a little too treble-heavy and cloudy for my ears. I tried a few of the usual Big-Name suspects and even passed on a J45-12 (quality-control issues). Sweetwater had the very cool Limited Edition Larrivee J-03MH; so, I connected with Patrick and got one a great sale price.

Solid Moon Spruce top (watch the Larivee video to learn about the interesting Moon Spruce story), solid Mahogany back and sides, Ebony fretboard and bridge, comfortable satin finish, lovely Abalone triple-ring rosette, impeccable Maple fretboard and hardwood body bindings, fast neck, gorgeous Vine headstock inlay. Understated beauty built on top-of-the-line construction. Very classy.

That being said, it was the sound that blew me away. Being a Jumbo, there is plenty of headroom, while even soft strumming produces a lush and satisfyingly listenable experience. The Mahogany must attenuate those oft-bombastic overtones that Maple and Rosewood can produce. Excels in the rhythm backing department. Single string play is articulate, forceful, albeit sweet. Ample bass. Soaring mids. Heavenly ringing B and E unison strings (tune the second unison string a tad sharp for a nice 3-D effect and lowered standing wave cancelation probability). Nothing comes across as unbalanced. What's not to like?

Years ago, I had an L-Series Larivee 12 that I liked but sold for a reason that now escapes me. So glad to be back home with Larrivee and the new Jumbo 12. This Limited Edition is hard-to-find. Grab one. You will not be disappointed.
Go Big or Go Home!

Great guitar that punches well above its price point & weight class. Larrivee's been making great guitars across the board with boutique quality and appointments and it's an accurate statement that it's "affordable luxury" - and should be given a hard look during every guitar hunt! Truth, I had the $$$ and no problem without flinching about buying a $ guitar that day I visited Sweetwater last month- but this one stood out! Awesome tone, playability- everything!

Go Big or Go Home!

Larrivee's deliver outstanding build quality, tone, playability, like ability and value and this J-03 MH Special is no exception! I bought this with the idea I could buy any guitar(s) I wanted at Sweetwater when I was there last month- the Taylor 717 was nice, as was the Gibson J 200, J185, upscale Guild D-55 as were many others but the Larrivee J03 Special stood out , especially the shimmering tone! The wood bindings and abalone inlays Larrivee's known for also a nice extra, and it's a very lightweight guitar, especially because of the Moonwood top. And the price drop made it an even easier decision to make. Larrivee's 12 strings just doesn't seem to have the same problem that I encountered with Taylor's, Gibson's, Martins & others a few years back: many of the other guys models didn't chime as 13 strings should, but rather sounded more like fat six strings, plus they used Mother of PLASTIC inlays on their guitars until you approached the $ price points when I sat down with 'em a few years back. The J-03 Special is a great guitar- AMERICAN MADE!!! And you might do better- but you'd likely have to pay a thousand $$$ or so more to get there, ie, Guild F512. ( the J03 has a bit mellow-er tone because of its MAHOGANY back & sides; seems to me the Guild comes in Rosewood or Maple, different tones altogether). The Larrivee J03 -12s or ANY of their guitars are worth a serious look in your next guitar hunt, acoustic or electric (The Baker T is the Tele Fender WISHES it could make, Leo just didn't live long enough to invent it!
