Before I found this pedal, I tried out several very popular bass compressors. None of them worked for me. They were too grabby or squashed the life out of my sound. They changed the tone in a way I didn't like. By contrast, this pedal is not transparent, but the character it adds is pleasing. And it's not overly aggressive unless you want it to be.

I find it's difficult to talk about why you like or don't like a compressor without resorting to vague generalities. All I'll say is if you like the optical compressor sound, you'll love this compressor. It sounds like the LA2A, but due to being able to adjust the attack time it offers you more versatility. It tightens up your low end and adds some harmonic content in the high mids that helps your bass cut through a mix.

Been using it for four years and don't have any plans to change things up.

I tried many compression/limiter pedals for my bass, and this is the best. It's night and day compared to the other 5 I seriously auditioned. Furthermore, on the "Compress" setting, it's fantastic with a strat-style guitar into a tube amp. It's magic. I don't write many reviews but had to make the time to write this one. Thank you Whirlwind for a fantastic pedal! Please don't change a thing--it's worth every penny.

This compressor pedal gives my bass not only a great eveness to my tone but a great dinamic to my playing as well.
I only use the compressor setting and it is a must if you want to clean your sound dynamics. It is the first pedal on my pedal chain. Highly recommended.

This is a spectacular bass compressor/limiter pedal! I've tried and owned a number of different comps for bass and they are either designed more specifically for guitar or they tend to be noisy. The OC has a couple features that are indispensable: QUIET operation, including the footswitch!! LED's showing gain reduction, a toggle for slow/medium/fast attack settings and a compressor/limiter toggle. The limiter can simulate a bit of the Fairchild sound when really pushed, think "Come Together", but even pulling back on it gives very usable sounds. The compressor settings tame peaks with a light touch. You can tell it's working, but it's not in your face compression. The build quality is exceptional, the price lower than most and with full functionality that you might expect from a rack unit.

This is the best bass compressor I've ever used. I've tested several over the years and have never settled on one. This pedal provides great tone and it's easy to use! Built like a tank, sturdy construction.
