Discover Expansive Hybrid Synthesis

When it first arrived at Sweetwater, the PWM Mantis Hybrid synthesizer was an instant head-turner. Developed in collaboration with the late Chris Huggett and PWM's Paul Whittington, this half-and-half duophonic keyboard clashes reliable DSP oscillator generation with all-analog processing. Unique ADSR envelopes, dual LFOs, an arpeggiator, and an onboard FX module barely scratch the surface when looking at the Mantis' unique feature set. Its auto-clock functionality and USB MIDI tempo syncing also make it a great addition to your production rig and DAW environment, lending itself to both serious analog performers and software users alike. Best of all, given a wealth of connectivity options and multiple output ports, the Mantis is a serious contender when it comes to setup integration. Snatch one for yourself to experience the unique and powerful world of hybrid synthesis.

What makes it a hybrid?

The answer lies in the Mantis' dual oscillators. They run on a designated DSP chip explicitly built to enhance sonic stability and control. Generated by complex mathematical formulas at startup, the Mantis' oscillators provide incredible audial versatility and reliability — all without compromising its beloved sound. From there, the Mantis' signal is sent through all analog mixing, gain staging, and filtering modules, giving it the hybrid name. However, don't be fooled: by way of the dual oscillators' Sine, Triangle, Saw, and Pulse wave types, as well as width modulation and pitch control, navigating the Mantis' interface still feels like dealing with the real thing.

Authentic analog sound, modified to taste

From its dual oscillators to an included digital effects bay, the Mantis is all business. Each oscillator features an additional sub-oscillator and drift function, allowing you to carve out — or add to — your pre-existing sound for a ripe, personalized output. Once passed through the ADSR and Sustain Fall envelope engine, you'll have plenty of opportunity to polish off your signal with one of two analog filters, including standard cutoff controls and resonance, width, and keytrack functionality. Think your sound could use a little extra mixing power? No problem: an onboard FX bay, including reverb and chorus effects, is readily available in between your envelope and LFO for serious creative potential.

Onboard digital effects:

Reverb

  • Reverb time
  • Reverb level
  • Reverb Highpass Filter
  • Reverb Lowpass Filter

Chorus

  • Chorus level
  • Chorus type

Robust built-in clock-syncing arpeggiator

A revolutionary synthesizer would be complete without a potent onboard arpeggiator engine. With six variable arpeggiator types, including Up, Down, Up/Down, Played, and Random modes, the auto-clock-capable Arp onboard the Mantis can introduce game-changing arpeggiation to your track within seconds. The arpeggiator can extend up to six octaves, making sequences from repeating bass lines to ambient, EDM-inspired plucks available at the touch of a button. Additionally, the analog/MIDI/USB-MIDI clock connectivity opens even more doors for experimentation with the rest of your studio equipment.

Inject imminent analog ambience into your studio setup

The inclusion of MIDI I/O, Clock I/O, headphone out, line out, and USB-C connection points set the Mantis' versatility over the limit. Alongside its rich analog projection, Sweetwater keyboard fanatics have found that this full-size standalone synth is an excellent sidekick for pre-existing modular setups and Eurorack builds. An additional MIDI-compatible USB interface also provides an excellent option for DAW integration and mobile-use applications — perfect for impromptu recording scenarios and environments with limited setup space. Finally, utilizing the onboard clock connection synchronizes the Mantis' arpeggiator directly to your tempo of choice, making for effortless project integration. Whether in a professional setting or on the road, you'll benefit from the Mantis' exponential connectivity options.

Reviews

Best sound on a Analog Hybrid Synth I ever played!
Just recently purchased this synth on Sweetwater and I must say, I have been nothing but impressed by the power of it's sound and feel!

It caught my eye by it's striking design but once I listened to demo's on YouTube, than I had to buy it, my first week with it, has been incredible, that fat and depth to the low end, is like a prophet 5 and moog on steroids, I owned both and can confirm, but as much as you can try to compare it's overall sound, it's completely unique, the quad mode, is really helpful, I have been able to compose these sick chord textures in that mode, that don't sound like any other synth I ever played, The reverb sound best when using just a touch, I have already designed a ton of new patches, this is the best new synth on the market, hands down!!!! I won't be surprised if the price shoots up on these, it's that good, get it, while you can!!!!!

Offbeat synth
Quite expensive but an unusual sounding machine. It will do quite refined 'soft' playable sounds, but it really excels at upfront basses, leads, soundtrack type stuff. The range of differing sounds this synth can make is staggering. The Oscar wavetable mode, recently added, allows you to blend a moving wavetable with VA osc etc. It's definitely a synth for people who are more 'electronic' than 'pop music', and a synth well suited to darkwave, techno, ambient. Not cheap, but you'll likely keep it for a long time if you can get one.

why not 49 or 61 keys
I LOVE THIS SYNTHESIZER!!! and it has led me to a personal journey on all the contibutions Chris Huggett had to my synth collection. YES, i know it was built as a compact synth and 3 octaves give it a lot of playability. 4 octives better, maybe. but 61 key would have opened up a lot more usage. it may have cost over $. so does the novation Summit and the hydrasynth delux has 73 keys and it's a beast. because the Mantis was marketed as Chris Huggetts last synth (he passed in late 2020 and it is now the middle of 2024) it felt like a limited edition like the McRIB.@ mcdonalds. "COME AND GET IT!! It's the last one!! i dont like that kind of marketing just for that reason.Still this is a great synth and because it is si new and i have so many other synth, i have not done a deep dive and the user group has more questions than answers. i recamend it as a compact synth. maybe the price might drop but i dont think so. the Sequential Pro 3 SE is $ and the moog sub37 drops in at $. i just purchased the uno synth pro keys for $ and Erik Norlander who works with IK helped voice the ANDROMIDA! ok im done.
WELL I FOUND THE PACKAGE I THOUGHT WAS MISSING
Static electricity in a box with Styrofoam and packing tape makes things stick together, especially if there is no silicon moisture pack in the box. anyway i found the list and the user manual. played around with the mantis a little more and i do see where is has potential for soundscapes. i found out the magnetic sides are for if someone wants to 3D print there own side panels. GOOD SYNTH. a little over priced for 37 keys. after touch is good. patch list is more about the sound designers than the actual sounds and layers, whether there is after touch and if the arpeggiator is on or off. well worth the wait. im glad i dove in and got mine before they ran out.
Manual?
why is this being sold with no manual or user guide. the pmw website has a link for the mantis but nothing happens.
when you click on user manual it takes you to the malevalent user manual. the build is ok i dont like the magnets that hold the sides on i dont see the reason. MAYBE IF THERE WAS A USER GUIDE I WOULD KNOW THE REASON.
