Meet the New Master of Your Modular Analog Synth Rig

With paraphonic playability and an impressive 90 modular patch points, the Moog Matriarch semi-modular analog synthesizer is a sound-design powerhouse. On its own, Matriarch packs everything players love about Moog — rich oscillators, dual ladder filters, powerful arpeggiation and sequencing, and even stereo analog delay. And once you begin exploring its patch points with your modular synth environment, it's soon apparent that the Matriarch offers a lifetime of creative potential. Complete with a delightfully responsive 49-key Fatar keybed (with patchable velocity and aftertouch), the Moog Matriarch paraphonic analog synthesizer is the perfect way to establish — or expand — your own custom modular synth setup.

Classic Moog architecture

With four fat analog oscillators and your choice of monophonic, duophonic, or paraphonic playability, the Matriarch starts off with a solid recipe for creative sound design. The main analog LFO features six selectable waveforms, while an additional LFO is present for even more modulation potential. Matriarch is equipped with two analog filters offering parallel (HP/LP), stereo (LP/LP), and series (HP/LP) modes for big sonic flexibility. Factor in dual analog ADSR envelopes and analog VCAs, plus an external audio input for processing other synths and drum machines, it's clear the Matriarch packs big creative potential.

Advanced sequencer is perfect for modular creativity

Synthesists at Sweetwater are longtime fans of Moog's built-in sequencers, and Matriarch's takes full advantage of this synth's paraphonic design. The 256-step sequencer supports up to four notes per step, allowing you to sequence chord progressions along with single-note patterns. Speaking of patterns, you can save up to 12 sequencer patterns for instant recall. Best of all, you can decouple the sequencer from the Matriarch's engine, allowing you to sequence external synths while playing your Matriarch from its 49-key Fatar keybed.

Extensive modular patchability plus MIDI connectivity

Whether you use its modular patch points or connect via MIDI, Matriarch offers seemingly endless possibilities when you integrate it with other synths and drum machines. It even offers 1/4-inch and 1/8-inch Eurorack-level audio outputs in addition to its line-level outputs, making it easy to interface with Eurorack without compromising audio quality. Of course, being a semi-modular synth, you don't need to patch anything to get started. But load up on some patch cables and begin experimenting with Matriarch's 90 modular patch points, and you'll soon discover sonic possibilities that go far beyond most subtractive analog synthesizers.

Moog Matriarch Semi-modular Paraphonic Analog Synthesizer Features:

Reviews

Still an Exciting and Powerful Synthesizer. All Moog and Beyond!
I waited quite some time to finally write my review of the Matriarch. Reason being I really wanted to get through the "Love at first use" emotions and make sure that this Matriarch wasn't going to be one of those Synths that after you use it a while you sort of get bored with it!
WELL THAT IS DEFINITELY NOT THE CASE!
Once again, this is classic Moog and simply never sounds bad! The oscillators are based on the Minimoog Voyager (and not Moog's modular range) so you get greater stability but still with plenty of fatness and bite.
When I purchased it, it was available in two main color schemes: the original multi-colored version and the all-black "Dark Series" version (now discontinued). I went for the Multi-Colored Model. The colours aren't just there for looks – they serve a function, making clear distinctions on the panel between the 'modules', and the various inputs and outputs on the rear are also colour-coded, linking nicely to the front panel. Besides I am getting a bit tired of all of the Dark, Black Themed Synths in my Music Studio. The whole front panel is the super-tough 'Lexan' sticker. Every one of our synths with Lexan stickers for their panels still looks like new after years a and years.

You can't beat the high quality great-feeling Fatar keyboard with monophonic, duophonic, and paraphonic playability Yes, be warned this is a Paraphonic Synth not a Polyphonic. If you have never played a Paraphonic Synthesizer it does get some getting use to but it is not difficult.

The sequencer section is extremely easy to use and allows you to create keyboard-transposable sequences at any tempo (and with tap tempo) up to 256 steps in length with up to four notes per-step. One of the easiest Sequencers I've ever used.

The filter section is incredibly versatile (and sounds fantastic) it is based on the highly regarded Moog 904A module. This is a stereo filter (again like the Voyager) but with three switchable modes – Series HP/LP, Stereo LP/LP, and Parallel HP/LP. You have a single big cutoff control, two resonance dials (one per filter L/R and you can use resonance to filter out lows too) a spacing control to blend/pan between the filters, plus envelope amount and keyboard tracking. It is amazing.

With 90 modular patch points you really get the power of a Modular System without any confusion and clutter.

Ok, The absence of patch memory can be a disadvantage for some players who need to quickly recall and switch between different sound setups, especially in live performance. But that is not what this Synthesizer is aiming for. There is still enough versatility to allow for "on the fly" changes to be made during live performance.

There are a total of 74 Global Settings that can be changed using a convoluted series of pressing and holding certain buttons to get into the Settings Mode and then using the Black Keys to select the Parameters and the White Keys to change values and using the Chart in the Owners Manual LUCKILY there is a FREE OnLine Global Editor created by Mark Reid that uses Google Chrome. When your Matriarch is plugged into your Computer via USB and you launch the Editor all of the Parameters get loaded into the Editor and from there you can change any or all of the 74 settings with ease.

Bottom Line, out of the 40 Plus Synths that I own, this Matriarch is the one I go to everyday!

Unmistakable Moog sound and build quality. The delay effect is unparalleled.

Six stars!
I would give the Moog Matriarch six stars if I could. Everything from the packaging to its physical and auditory presence screams quality.

This was my first true synthesizer purchase, and I am glad I spent the extra time researching what I wanted. Several YouTube channels feature artists playing and explaining analog vs. digital synths.

Accessories you might consider: On-Stage KS8291XX keyboard stand; Moog EP-3
Music background: classical, jazz, ambient
Moog Matriarch is LIT
Yes this synth is fire. It delivers exactly what you expect from a Moog oscillator's thicc goodness; but what this synthesizer gives you is tons of options to get weird.

I have had so much fun using random patch points to play with my friends and synth random stuff together.

Another amazing feature I use a lot is the instrument input in the back. At first I only used my guitar but then realized I could patch anything to the back from my DAW and pass it through the modulation and stereo delay.

If you don't mind using pictures to reference your patches (no presets dawg) and you enjoy messing with knobs and switches while crafting your sound: this is one of the best synths for this purpose that I have encountered. Enough adjectives go listen to
It.

BLINKY BLISS
Finally I have it (!!) just over a year after having played one at the Moog factory in Asheville.
What a cool machine, and OH those blinky lights! My kind o' synth...harkens to the days of the original analogs.

Haven't tried out the mini plugs/modular capabilities yet, but the tonal variances available thanks to 4 mixable oscillators are wonderful. To me this beast shines best while arpeggiating/sequencing and then altering the tone each time things come around on the loop, but I've heard some fat lead sounds out of it on YT as well.
VERY versatile!!!

Some comments on the 'net belittled its construction but to me it's a lot like a Multimoog -- more plastic in the chassis then the Mini but still MOOGNIFICENT! Knobs/wheels have a superb quality feel. WORTH EVERY PENNY.

As usual Brian and Hunter did outstanding flying it to my door in record time -- ordered it late Tues nite/landed Friday afternoon! (how DO they do it?!)

Thanks SW!!!!

What Do Our In-house Gear Experts Think?
Adam Trudel
The Moog Matriarch semi-modular synth is the best synth I’ve ever played, and really piqued my interest in older synths. The velocity and aftertouch sensitive Fatar keys are versatile and feel great, and the myriad tone options mean never-ending tone production. The arpeggiator is the best I’ve used, and you could easily create an entire album using just the arpeggiator/filters.
Dan Murphy
Classic Moog sound with endless creative potential. It never gets boring. A great semi-modular synth even for beginners, and a must have for synth enthusiasts in my opinion!
Joseph Pryer
As a in the box producer for just under a decade, I have used many software synths to create unique sounds for my productions. I've always been looking to get my hands on a hardware synth to get some of that analog "mojo" and Moog Matriarch was a phenomenal starting point for me. Being able to make interesting and complex sounds with this gear using the 90 patch points is truly an amazing experience. With the ability to record in warm and fuzzy tones using the built in analog outputs on the back, I am able to get analog processing in the box, and finally add some true synth mojo to my productions!

Want real Moog sound? Take it from the die-hard analog synth masters here at Sweetwater: buy a Moog. It doesn't matter which one; their synths start at top quality and only go up from there. Sweetwater's relationship with Moog goes way back, and some of us fondly remember the last time Bob himself came to visit. Over the years, we've had the honor of watching Moog grow and evolve, and with synthesis experts like Daniel Fisher on staff, we're still one of the first companies to catch wind of new Moog products - they never fail to impress! Whether it's a classic reissue, a breakthrough new keyboard, or even a cool effects pedal, you can be sure anything you get from Moog will make you happy, and we'd love to tell you all about it.
