Don't Let This Active Speaker's Small Size Fool You!

The SRM150 combines Mackie's proven mixer and SRM Active loudspeaker technologies to create a powerful, great-sounding 3-channel PA system that is ultra-compact, versatile and expandable. The Mackie SRM150 Compact Active PA System is ideal for a wide variety of applications ranging from boardroom A/V to live musical performance in coffee houses, piano bars, or rehearsals, just to name a few. You get portable, compact, and versatile sound reinforcement with the SRM150!

Built-in mixer

At the very heart of the SRM150 is a Mackie mixer, with all the versatility and features you've come to expect from the company. Channels 1 and 2 can be used for mic/line sources, thanks to the handy Neutrik Combo jack, which accepts either 1/4" TRS or XLR connections. True 48V phantom power is supplied, so you can use even the most finicky condenser mics with confidence. You can also plug in your guitar, bass (or any other hi-Z instrument) into Channel 1, press the CH1 Instrument switch and you get all the benefits of a DI box, without the hassle and added expense. Channel 3 is reserved for stereo devices, such as MP3, CD, or tape players - a great feature for performers working with backing tracks.

3-band EQ

The SRM150 boasts a highly musical EQ, and the bands work very independently of each other, allowing you to cut or boost a specific band without affecting the others. With up to 15dB boost/cut capability per band, the onboard active EQ provides amazing tone-sculpting latitude and feedback control.

High output, premium sound

All the bells and whistles in the world are worthless if you can't crank out great sound! Mackie matched the SRM150's powerful 150-watt Class-D amplifier with a 5.25" full range, weather-resistant neodymium driver. The SRM150 puts out a blistering 120dB SPL at one meter and sounds great, whether you're accompanying a vocalist with your acoustic at the coffee house or making an A/V presentation.

A quality personal monitor

Not only is the SRM150 an excellent loudspeaker system for compact PA applications, but it also works very well as a personal monitor. The onboard 3-band EQ facilitates feedback suppression and offers the same great tone-shaping capabilities as Mackie's popular compact mixers. Mic stand-ready with an included boom arm adapter, the SRM150 puts total control right at your fingertips. In addition to stand mounting, the SRM150 was designed to provide the proper monitoring angle when used in traditional floor wedge and tabletop placement.

Rear patchbay

Want to use a second SRM150 or an SRM450? The rear panel Thru jack provides connectivity for an extra powered monitor, or for sending a mic level output to the front of house system( by activating the mic/line switch. The Main input also has a dual purpose. It can be used to receive monitor mixer signals, or to link more SRMs.

Reviews

Dynamic and versatile
I love this system. I went from a large Pa to A Bose system that I also love but still had to carry heavy bass.
I was pleasantly surprised by the sound of the Mackie... For instruments , vocals and hooking into CDs TV or computers.
Recently I used it for Christmas program at church and it provided vocal control when used independently with the house system. No feedback. Can't wait to try it with my harmonizer. Well worth the money.
Music background: Retired from local bands singing for the Lord.
Well designed and good performance
I was replacing some older Galaxy Audio Hot Spot personal monitors and decided to give these Mackie units a try. The Mackie's work really well, like the Galaxy Audio units before them.

I don't use them as a personal PA. I use them for the stereo signals (chorus, delay, reverb) in my wet-dry-wet rig in my home studio.

I can't recommend this approach enough. These units are small so they take up very little space. They don't have deep, powerful bass, but you don't need that for the time-based effects that typically operate in the mid- and high-frequencies anyway.

This setup allows me to send compressed and overdriven signals to my main amp, and clean (or dirty) stereo time-based effects to the Mackie's. The result is the main amp is super-articulate because it's not getting bogged down with a smear of time-based effects. The little Mackie's fill in the space between the notes and add a super-wide stereo field with dream-like qualities if you want. More cost effective and much less space compared to adding two full-range powered monitors on either side of your amp.

The volume these little Mackie's produce is more than enough, even when the main amp is cranked to marriage-threatening levels because the reverb and other effects don't need to be anywhere near as loud as the main amp to give the intended sense of space.
Well made and a smooth reponse.
This is a solid little speaker.
It's a plastic enclosure but at this size it's very sturdy.

The controls are smooth with no wiggle in the hardware.
After 2 years there is no static on the pots and we've had no issues with it.

It's very handy having bass, treble and gain controls right on the front panel plus multiple inputs (front and back) if you want to make your own combination of a main mix + more of your own channel if you want.

The frequency response is very smooth from 130Hz up to 17Hkz or higher with no major peaks or valleys.
Naturally there's not much bass response since it's not designed for that.

There are C weighted frequency response JPG photos attached which were taken at 1 meter indoors, 3ft off the ground and 20feet from any walls. Those are linear sine wave sweeps rather than white noise since this doesn't have a DSP tweaking things.

The response starts dropping around 150Hz and is down by -3dB at 130Hz which is fine for it's intended purpose. Naturally there are limits to the physics of small drivers in sealed enclosures and it's pretty neutral with no particular bass hump or boomy notes.

It does well for what it's designed for which is to be clear and fairly loud if needed to let you hear vocals or instruments in a fairly neutral tone at close range without taking up much room.

Just for fun, if you paired this with a small subwoofer people may be surprised at what you can do from a small cabinet.

With the sealed design there is no free bass gain from a speaker port since this is an acoustic suspension design even though it has molded corners that look like ports. Those are sealed off.

The sealed design is intentional to increase power handling of low notes since the sealed design supports the woofer quite well with the air. The design ensures that the driver isn't affected much by low notes below the port tuning frequency that could overload a 4th order bass reflex type.

As is, it was a good choice to go with a sealed acoustic suspension since that avoids any mid-bass peaks near the male vocal range and also goes a long ways towards making a neutral sound.

Surprisingly it has a regular, full sized IEC power cord just like any PA speaker or amp so any power chord fits fine.

Cons:
- It might pick up a little sparkle if it had a tweeter but it does a good job regardless.
- We can't adjust the angle

My only real complaint is that the circuit breaker on the back is exactly the same size, color and shape as the power switch and it's right next to it. Folks try to turn it ON or Off fumble around a while and keep landing on the circuit breaker which sticks out the same amount.

The power switch is a bit too small and it's black color right next to other black hardware plus the whole thing is tilted back putting the back panel fairly out of sight. People end up messing with the switch for 20 seconds and end turning it around to find it.

Overall it's a nice little speaker and certainly better built that the Behr..cough ringher $ clones
that copied the design and put their name on it.

Awesome
Great piece of equipment. Great sound and just what I needed to play my keyboard, have a mic and also hook up multi tracks for a small room meeting, church service or coffee house or jail ministry. Sure beats carrying the heavy amp.

Awesome Monitor
I use this as a vocal monitor in a classic rock cover band. Works like a dream and has plenty of volume. Even on our loudest stages I've never turned it up past 3/4 volume. I've even used it as a stand alone speaker with music piped in through the RCA plugs and a microphone plugged in the front. Served the purpose well.
