Large Console-style Monitor Control

Engineers searching for a full-featured monitor controller for their DAW-based studio will find much to love about the API MC531. Inspired by the center section of API's acclaimed analog consoles, the MC531 includes a 41-detent control room knob for effortless volume control, along with a generous compliment of I/O. Programmable subwoofer integration makes incorporating your sub a piece of cake. The feature-packed desktop monitor controller also includes dual headphone outputs and a built-in talkback mic. Beyond that, the MC531 is built using the exact same circuitry you'd find in a full-blown API console, yielding you low noise and crystal-clear sound. Whether you work in a large commercial space or an intimate project studio, the API MC531 provides computer-based workflows with large console-style monitor control.

Enough I/O for a large-scale studio

The MC531 is jam-packed with I/O. A main and two alternate stereo outputs accommodate your main studio monitors, along with your secondary speakers and mix cubes. The alternate outputs include trims for speaker level matching, something that we really appreciate here at Sweetwater. Programmable subwoofer integration links the MC531's sub output with its main and/or either of its alternate outputs. You also get seven selectable stereo input sources, which include three analog line-level inputs, AES, USB, 3.5mm, and Bluetooth.

The next natural step in product design

"In our ongoing mission to provide audio professionals with products suited to their evolving workflow, the company decided that a monitor controller would be a natural next step in product design. We've certainly had many requests for a unit like this over the years. The MC531 provides users with the exact same circuitry they would find in an API console, plus a few extra features that many people will find useful." — Todd Humora, API's director of engineering

Teeming with console-style features

The API MC531 is a standalone version of the center section of the company's analog consoles, with the features to match. A 41-detent control room knob puts volume control right at your fingertips. Dual independent headphone outputs enable two people to benefit from personalized monitor mixes. You also get a built-in talkback mic for easy communication between the engineer and artists.

Professional monitoring solution for commercial spaces and project studios

"API has always strived to engineer products that the audio community needs and wants. In the case of the MC531, we're offering a truly professional monitoring solution that's equally at home in a commercial studio as it is in a smaller, personal creative space. Anyone familiar with an API console will immediately recognize the layout, functionality and the tradition that's built into this incredible sounding monitor controller." — Larry Droppa, API president

Reviews

Studio hub.
This api monitor controller was just what I needed to tie my main mixer and peripheral sources together - all in one neat, convenient place. Great api sound, built to last, and I know this sounds nuts, but I love the colored, illuminated switch buttons on this thing. Gorgeous! Really adds to the "atmosphere" in my hybrid studio/listening room.

API ALWAYS GETS IT RIGHT.
MY ONLY WISH IS THIS WAS A MORE ATMOS FRIENDLY MONITORING SYSTEM.

Beautiful sounding unit
This monitor controller sounds amazing!

The DA is superb and clean, and headphone amps are very powerful. Monitor inputs sound like anything API: punchy, present and fat!

Bigger size than I thought. I wish it had a L/R swap button. Yeah, some plug-ins do that, but still...

Despite that, this is a fantastic sounding unit! Totally recommend it.

Beautiful API quality with some flaws
The unit looks lovely on my desk, really gives some analog life to the look and feel of an in-the-box mixing room. The big knob and relay switches have a solid feel and nice "click". The headphone amps and DAC are the quality I'd expect from API.

Some things about this design could be better. The location of the headphone jacks on the lower rear and surrounded by other jacks are impossible to find by feel. At least one should be on the front, accessible to user. Any vibration (keyboard typing on the same desk, sub energy) causes the top lid to rattle annoyingly. I fixed that with some friction tape but we shouldn't have to do tape workarounds at this price point. I purchased my unit in late 2022. At least at that point in time, USB interface was incompatible with Apple silicon macs. I had to send it in for reprogramming at my shipping cost. Unknown if this is still an issue - there is no mention of computer requirement in the documentation.
No power switch.

The segmented meter is big and beautiful. At least on the built in DAC, +6 on the DBu meter represents digital zero. So the top half of the meter is never seen in my primary use. More of a preference than a "flaw" but I wish this meter could be user calibrated.
