Value-packed Tube Ribbon Mic

Golden Age R1 Tube Active ribbon microphone combines a classic ribbon transducer with two transformers and a tube buffer amp. The result is natural, musical ribbon sound with the consistency afforded by active electronics. Fat, warm, and punchy, with fast transients and life-like realism, the R1 Tube delivers gorgeous, just-press-record sonics you won't need to labor over to make sound great.

A robust tube mic with classic ribbon sound

Golden Age R1 Tube Active delivers a classic ribbon sound with smooth highs and extended low end. Its fast transient response makes it a great choice for drums, acoustic and electric guitar, and piano. And with its high sensitivity (for a ribbon), it's awesome for capturing sensitive vocal performances. With its budget-friendly price tag, a pair of these versatile ribbons is perfect for stereo applications such as drum overheads. Unlike vintage ribbons, the R1 Active MKII features ultra-high 165dB SPL handling, which means you can use it on loud sources without trepidation. All considered, the Golden Age R1 Tube Active is an incredible value. It's the ribbon mic you've been waiting for. Pick up a pair from Sweetwater today!

The Golden Age Project

The Golden Age Project was founded in 2005 on the belief that vintage gear sounds best, and the desire to pass on this sonic legacy to a new generation of musicians, engineers, and producers. All discrete, Class A signal paths with no integrated circuits; the use of transformers, stepped controls, and military-grade build quality: these are the cornerstones of the legendary British equipment deployed in world-class recording and broadcast studios in the 1970s — the Golden Age of analog. Fat, warm, punchy, and authoritative; this is the sound heard on countless hits for nigh unto half a century. Locating, purchasing, restoring, and maintaining vintage gear is time-consuming and costly. Fortunately, this small, family-owned Swedish company makes gear the same way it was made back in the day — at an amazingly gentle price.

A distributor of high-end studio equipment for many years, Golden Age Project founder Bo Medin wanted to be able to offer products with much of the same exclusive sound in a price range that made them available to a larger audience. Inspired by original designs, Golden Age uses modern technology to re-create that lush, opulent sound, making it surprisingly affordable. They use some modern ingenuity to add new functionality to superb classic designs and produce them in a cost-effective way which allows them to be both optimized and affordable. From outboard equipment to condenser, dynamic, and ribbon mics; you can outfit your entire studio with vintage-inspired Golden Age gear without exceeding your budget.

Reviews

Better than I expected.
I am using this mic for the saxophone recording and practice, it produces very powerful sound c

Absolute knockout for French horn
Alright, order this mic. Stop what you're doing and just get it before people realize what's going on. Do it before you finish reading this glowing review. You've been warned.

While I wouldn't call this an impulse purchase, I didn't necessarily know if I'd need to add a ribbon to my mix of dynamics and condensers. I also didn't really know which ribbon mic would be the best fit for French horn, but heard great things about the Golden Age brand as a whole. I went for the tube version over the others because of some extra high end and the rave reviews from brass players online, but really I was doing a lot of guesswork. I guessed wisely.

What showed up to my door is one of the best unboxing experiences I have had in recent memory. The red mic is large and gorgeous—a vintage beauty wrapped in a purple velvet bag. It comes with its own 7 prong XLR (you'll still need a 3 prong lying around), a sturdy, matching, passive power box, and a decent ac plug. All of this is encased in a silver, beautifully padded carrying case. Compare this with the (also great sounding) Neumann TLM102 that came alongside it in... a cardboard box. Snore.

Performance: As a mic on the bell, it's the best sounding mic I've used for studio French horn, full stop. I've played on 414s, 421s, a number of Neumanns, SM7 (and all the way down to SM57s). All these are great, and they all lose out to the Golden Age. It's worth mentioning that while I can brag about it all day, I can't compare it to a higher end ribbon like Royer, which I have not tried. It's so tough to capture an instrument that doesn't face the listener. That said, this mic is less expensive, warmer, more forgiving, and more tailored to French horn than any of the aforementioned mics.

I've been positioning it about 3 ft from the bell and 1.5 ft off the ground. I've been using a second mic in the room to fill in the high end, but honestly a good EQ would 100% make this GA ribbon a great standalone. It's a great standalone without EQ, if I'm being honest.

For vocals, it's really quite nice. It wouldn't be my first or even second choice for this application, but again with some EQ on the high end, it'll do the job and it'll do better than expected. If you like an old school sound, passing on this mic would make you a silly Willy.

Alright, so for the price, what's wrong with it? If I had to say where they skipped out, it's probably the XLR and phantom power box. The output Jack doesn't feel quite as nice or easy as my interface does when I plug in my own XLR. That said, it has a sturdy enclosure and I'm not worried. I also don't love how tightly coiled the XLR is around the mic. I understand the need for flexibility in mic adjustment, but time will tell if that's a healthy positioning for the cable or if it will wear. But again, LOOK AT THE PRICE.

For presentation, performance, and price, this Golden Age Ribbon gets my 100% approval. Consider me absolutely charmed.

Brass player’s secret weapon!
Ive been a recording engineer for 31 years and have used more than a few "industry standard" mics. On brass it is pretty widely accepted that ribbon mics work well. Basically three levels in my mind... vintage beasts which cost more than some cars, mid-priced workhorses and the budget friendly. This is squarely in the budget category but sounds as nice as some of the mid-priced mics. And unfair comparison I have done recently was with my Neumann TLM107 which is not a ribbon and is almost 5 times the price. Yes, on solo brass the Neumann sounds more transparent and has a better frequency range. But the ribbon actually works better in a full band mix. The color and freq response gives the necessary bite to the sound to make horns cut through the mix.
I would put this mic up against that other famous ribbon mic that starts with the letter R any day...and buy three so you can record the whole horn section at once for the price of that other mic. Plus the GAP looks really cool!

Beautiful sounding mic.
Beautiful sounding mic.
Great to study ribbon technique
My wife bought me this as a gift years ago and it still gets me excited. Ribbon mics are a different beast, but this is forgiving and provides some great sounds after you learn the right technique. I've used it for everything from voiceover to instrumental recordings. As long as you have a treated space, or intend to include some room or ambient noise, this thing will do the trick.
