Stereo image is of utmost importance to the quality of a great mix, but many tools geared toward expanding stereo image often introduce unwanted phase shifts, cancellations, and comb filtering. Painstakingly modeled from the 2024 TEC Signal Processing Award–winning hardware, Brainworx SPL BiG processes stereo input with a unique filtering network that differs from standard mid-side processing, thereby preventing all these issues (though it features mid-side processing and metering options as well). Additionally, SPL BiG lets you add analog tone and does everything with only five controls and an extremely small CPU footprint. Finally, SPL BiG's AirBass EQ is derived from the SPL IRON mastering compressor with plug-in-only features such as Panorama controls and automatic gain compensation.

Extremely intuitive control scheme

With only three knobs and two switches, SPL BiG couldn't be simpler to use. Range control adjusts the filter frequency for exacting control over the range you'll be processing. Stage control makes important mix components feel more present or subtle due to how it manipulates the slope. Finally, the Bigness control does exactly what you'd expect. This unique dry/wet mix knob blends processed and original audio with SPL's proprietary method, allowing you to parallel process with precision — all free of unwanted artifacts.

Modern workflow features

Using a passive filter inspired by the AirBass circuit in the SPL IRON mastering compressor, the AirBass EQ essentially acts as a bass boost function. Plus, SPL BiG from Brainworx offers plug-in-exclusive features like Panorama controls, automatic gain compensation, and mid-side metering and mid-side solo functionality. Altogether, Sweetwater studio engineers love the depth and ease of use that SPL BiG awards them.
