Four Flexible Channels to Rock Your Rack Rig

Equipped with four versatile channels, the ENGL Amplifiers Modern Rock Preamp ES530 will embolden your rack rig with true tube saturation. Each of this preamp’s two main channels — Clean and Lead — feature their own Lo- and Hi-gain options, running the gamut from spotless shimmer to edge-of-breakup bite to full-on crunch. Far beyond a strictly “rock” focused preamp, the ES530’s 3-band EQ (Clean/Crunch), 4-band EQ (Soft Lead/Heavy Lead), and extensive tone-shaping switching options allow this amp to excel in almost any sonic application. Further, a stereo serial FX loop seamlessly integrates into your effects rig, while Sweetwater guitarists find the built-in 1.5-watt power amplifier to be perfect for recording and silent practice via the headphone jack. Straightforward, versatile, and beaming with the power of glowing glass, the ENGL Amplifiers Modern Rock Preamp ES530’s 4-channel fury is a superb addition to any rack.

ENGL Amplifiers Modern Rock Preamp ES530 Features:

  • True tube preamp emboldens your rack with a rock-ready roar

Reviews

Blown away
Running this preamp through my Fractal Axe-Fx iii (4CM) ... The sound went from awesome to frickin' incredible. This tube preamp along with my 50+50 EGNL amp is over the top.
Wasn’t expecting this
I arranged a trip to Sweetwater with my sales rep Josh Strid, who was fantastic! I had given him a list of gear and when I arrived he had that gear setup and ready to go in the iso both. Expectations was to walk out with my dream amp. After going through all the amps, I tried the Engl E530 last out of curiosity and found what I was looking for. All that work I put Josh through just to walkout with an affordable preamp. I'm currently running it in the efx loop of my helix like a stompbox into a peavey classic 50/50 power amp. The preamp does sound better using pedals over the helix, but the helix is easier for me because it can change efx's and channel switch the Engl. It has a really good clean channel. My only gripe is the low/hi gain doesn't match well together for me. Since they share the gain control I can't get them how I want. To solve this problem I use the helix to either feed the low gain more signal or feed the hi gain less signal. I love this preamp! I play a lot of fast pace thrash style music and I can hear what I'm doing using this Engl. It has led to being more relaxed when playing because the distortion is tight & clear.
Fantastic and Versatile Preamp, but One Drawback
The guitar rack world is pretty niche, but this preamp is very well known. It's been around since the early 2000s, very often copied, and made into plug-ins. This preamp really can do it all. It has an excellent clean tone and pure tube circuit for pedals or acoustic electric guitars, it has tight and punchy metal tones, but it really shines for rock tones, hence why it's named "Modern Rock". It is light, durable, and extremely versatile with the tone shaping options. It's great for home recording, just plug into an interface with a cab simulator and now you've got a professional sound with real tube tone. My one issue with this preamp is that it's very noisy if you've got some gain on the lead channel, which is why I pair it with my ISP Decimator ProRackG in the loop. That's really the only drawback of this preamp. With that being said, I've gigged dozens of times with this preamp and it has never once failed me.
