This snare head provides a nice balanced sound and does best at medium tunings and higher. I first attempted to tune it low but I've found it is a little flat and dents easily below a certain tension (corresponding to a medium snare tuning). At medium or above though, it has heft and snap while keeping that crackly papery sound that identifies the snare drum in a dense mix. The dot for me is extending in the wrong direction, but there is a difference in sound between that area and the periphery of the head when struck. Basically it's harder to roll on, but there's also more thwack there. Onomatopoeia is the drummer's bread and butter!
