A Value-packed Full Conservatory Student Oboe

The Victory Triumph Series Student oboe is an easy-to-play, great-sounding instrument that’s built to last. Made from synthetic wood, the Triumph Series student Bb oboe mimics the look and feel of wooden instruments while warding off damage caused by moisture, temperature changes, and the inevitable drops and dings. Equipped with a full conservatory key system, this student oboe is a one-of-a-kind, value-packed instrument that gives even the finest professional horns on the market a run for their money. When you invest in the Triumph Series Student oboe, you can rest assured that you’ve given your student the tools they need to tackle a broad range of repertoire with comfort and ease.

Full conservatory key system allows students to explore advanced techniques

Unlike most student-model oboes, the Triumph Series Student oboe it boasts a full conservatory system with semi-automatic style nickel-plated keys for a smooth playing experience. A vented low Bb and full ring system D key expand the tonal range of the Triumph Series Student oboe, allowing students to explore new sonic horizons. Additionally, D–C and left-hand G#–A trills offer convenient alternatives to tricky fingerings, reducing frustration and fostering the development of proper playing technique. Finally, nickel plating covers the keys and gives this oboe an eye-catching appearance while maintaining its overall functionality.

Weather-resistant synthetic wood body

The synthetic wood body of the Triumph Series Student oboe mimics the look and feel of grenadilla and exhibits a warm, rich tonality on par with wooden instruments. Resistant to damage caused by temperature fluctuations, humidity, and the occasional drops and dings, the Triumph Series Student oboe requires minimal maintenance and is designed to deliver reliable performance for years.

Reviews

Very good student oboe!
PRO 1:
The instrument itself is a very good student oboe. It's got almost all the keys of a full conservatory system oboe except the D key is a plateau key, not the double-ring D key of a full conservatory system oboe. The accompanying descriptive text is wrong because it claims the D key is a double-ring key. I suspect that Sweetwater simply copied the text that the maker sent along with the more expensive instrument and didn't bother to check the accuracy.

PRO 2: It includes the left-hand-F key which can make some passages much easier than on oboes which only have the traditional right-hand-F and forked-F fingerings. This was one of the reasons I bought this oboe and one of the reasons I will recommend it to people who ask me about buying a step-up oboe.

CON 1: the reed which is included is horrible. No amount of soaking it makes it work any better, but using my hand and squeezing it near where the cane is attached to the mandrel makes it work fine. Some oboe reeds come with tiny brass wires at that place so that the musician can squeeze the reed as needed and it will stay. But I wasn't buying the oboe because it included the reed. So it was not a big deal although I would have been happier with a reed that actually worked. But I can only imagine some family buying this instrument for a child and being upset when the reed didn't work. Most likely the student would already be playing a school oboe and would have a reed that worked so it's not such a big deal. I already had several reeds so the inclusion of a junk reed is no big deal.

CON 2: forget about the claim of "50 point inspection" -- at most all anybody did was to take my oboe out of the case, remove the pieces from the plastic bags, remove any wedges which may have been holding the keys shut during shipment and maybe insert a reed to play a single note to be sure it made an oboe sound. But they sure as heck did NOT "play test" this oboe because it didn't work when I put it together! Yes, putting a reed in and not covering any of the keys I was able to make an oboe sound once I gave up trying to get the included reed to work! And the left-hand only (i.e. top joint only) fingerings worked. But the moment I tried to add any of the right-hand keys (i.e. F# and lower pitches) the sound stopped. Luckily in addition to being a music teacher I'm a trained band instrument repair tech and know how to adjust oboes. The little keys which open for the notes Bb (middle line as well as high Bb) and C (3rd space as well as high C) were opening when they shouldn't be -- the adjusting screws had NOT been adjusted. Before anybody says "the screws may have vibrated loose in shipment" let me say that turning the screws took a little effort because they are fit very precisely and very well in their keys so they are definitely NOT loose enough to vibrate to a different adjustment just from being tossed around in shipment. So whomever was doing this supposed "50 point inspection" did not fully play-test this instrument! Play-testing an instrument means actually playing EVERY note and EVERY fingering, even the alternates, to be sure the instrument actually works before sending it out to a customer. Had I not been a repair tech I would have had two alternatives: Pay a local repair tech to make my brand new oboe or package it back up, wait for Sweetwater to arrange a UPS pickup, hope that a different instrument tech from the person who originally play-tested my oboe was going to actually check things out, then wait for it to be shipped back to me.

Neither PRO nor CON: the case that comes with the oboe is solid, rectangular (i.e. not contoured), without a case cover (most student level instruments don't include a case cover) with space for storing a number of reeds in individual cases but not for inclusion of a very large multi-reed case. It includes a nice double-ended swab, a polishing cloth, no cork grease (why not -- it's very important for instruments with tenon corks), a name tag. The case will over very decent protection especially if a student is carrying the oboe back and forth to school frequently.

Overall I'm glad I bought this oboe -- the price was excellent for an almost-full-conservatory system oboe, the tone is very good for a plastic body instrument, and the intonation is excellent.
