In essence, the Rossum Electro-Music Trident Eurorack module is a trio of analog oscillators with a ton of modulation potential. In addition to frequency modulation (linear and exponential) and pulse-width modulation, Trident's unique Zing modulation opens up a ton of creative possibilities. Each oscillator can be used independently if you wish, but the real sonic potential is opened up when you use the second and third oscillators to modulate the first oscillator's outputs. What is "Zing" modulation?
It's basically ring modulation, applied in an extremely musical way. In normal ring modulation circuits, modulating the carrier signal can produce enharmonic results that aren't considered musical — think atonal clangs and drones. However, if the mathematical relationship between the carrier and modulator are just right, the result can sound very musical. Zing modulation in the Trident module means that when you sync the signals with an oscillator's Sync button, the results are always harmonically related to the carrier signal. In other words, you get the sound design capabilities of ring modulation, without aharmonic sidetones.
