Javier Reyes Signature LTD 8-string

One of the most innovative guitarists in contemporary progressive metal, Javier Reyes continually pushes the envelope with his band Animals as Leaders and as a solo artist. A master on the 8-string guitar, Javier worked hand-in-glove with ESP in the design of the LTD Signature Series JR-608. Javier’s signature 8-string sports a 5-piece walnut/maple/padauk through-neck design and a 27" baritone scale length that gives you free reign to explore a massive pitch range on a single instrument.

Built for performance

The ESP LTD Javier Reyes Signature JR-608 features a swamp ash body and highly figured quilted maple top; these tonewoods deliver full-bodied tone with excellent note articulation — particularly important on an extended-range instrument such as this. For enhanced playability, the guitar is spec’d with a Graphtec Black Tusq nut and a Macassar ebony fingerboard with custom inlays and glow-in-the-dark side markers. Top-shelf components include a string-through-body Hipshot bridge and a pair of Javier’s new Fishman Javier Reyes Open Core Signature Pickups with a mini-switch that engages multiple voicings.

LTD: huge value with ESP quality

ESP’s LTD marque was created to bring a more affordable version of the classic designs and quality of ESP guitars to a new market. The entire ESP LTD line of instruments features premium tonewoods, quality pickups, and solid hardware for a lifetime of use. An exacting eye for detail and quality means that every instrument is ready to rock when it leaves the factory. An impressive list of signature axes by some of today’s biggest guitar and bass heroes shows the popularity and respect commanded by the ESP LTD marque. Sweetwater is proud to carry such a distinguished line of musical instruments.

Reviews

Does anyone know how to put this guitar down?
This is my first 8-string guitar. I'm pretty familiar with 7-strings and decided to take the plunge, see if I could learn some new techniques, and it's unlocked a whole new world of inspiration for me.

Unlike some other 8s I have played, the neck on this is really comfortable. Don't get me wrong, if you're coming from 6 to 8 strings, it's still thick, but this guitar makes it really approachable. The pickups give you everything you need to play djenty riffage, or thumping, or beautiful jazz... surprisingly versatile. I think it's also one of the prettiest guitars I own - the 5-piece neck, the body itself, and the figured top are gorgeous. Bridge is really low profile and comfortable.

I have no idea what to say other than I don't know how to put the guitar down. It's giving me a break to write this review, but this won't last long.

Best Guitar I have owned in 45 years
I bought this in March 2023. I have been playing it continually since. I have a Les Paul, a custom Strat, a 335, and a PRS 7 string. With the electronics on this 8 string, I can mimic perfectly each one of those guitars with the flick of a switch or knob. The neck is fabulous! I do not even use those guitars now. Everything I am doing now is on this JR608. It took a bit of retraining my pick hand to get used to the string spacing and amount of stretch and space, but the expanded range is well worth it. I also happen to like some fret board real estate for my fingers. The best part is the pick-ups and switching; the tonal possibilities are great and I have found that the 5 way toggle will also work as a volume changer also. (a very slight change in volume as well as the in and out of phasing is something none of my other guitars have and so you know, the others have multi-toggle positions and push/pull options). I am not a tech guru but the pickups cannot be complained about. I have no need to ever search for another guitar. Now that I have written a review that is somewhat positive, I do need to point out that a good strap is necessary! It is a beast and weighs more than my LP and PRS. It is a solid guitar. It came set up perfect- I still have the strings and battery from purchase on it and they are doing well. At 63 yrs old, I play jazz, fusion, psychadelic, ambient, blues and some Rock. I do not do the drop tunings or Djent heavy thrash that most guys use this for. It is the Mount Everest of guitars and will give you room to spread your wings. My favorite 8-string
I was initially on the fence about getting this, but it was totally worth it. I was hesitant to go with a neck-through design, as I'd heard that the highest frets were somewhat difficult to reach, but this turned out not to be true; I don't have any problem playing leads all the way up to the 24th fret. I'd also heard that the 13.7" radius made it "not shred friendly," but again, this was not true. More importantly, Javier's signature Fishman pups are incredibly unique and versatile. They're extremely responsive to your playing, and between the 5-way pickup switch and the mini-toggle, you can get a huge range of tonal characteristics, even within one patch. This makes it easy to play anything from finger style classical to death metal. Lastly, I think the 27" scale length is perfect for an 8-string. Overall great guitar and would highly recommend, especially for players who want to be able to play a variety of genres.
I thought it would be nicer
The neck is not smooth. You can feel something when you run your hand down the neck. The finger board looks like it needs to be cleaned. There is a cloudy spot in the finish on the head stock. The finish on the body near the binding is sloppy. The strings are not installed correctly. The 8th string is not the largest. It plays and sounds nice. I will change the strings. I just thought it would be nicer.
