Creates Lo-fi Effects Right at the Source

The Solomon PhōnFreq enables you to achieve low-fidelity, telephone-style effects right at the source — no half-baked, DIY mic configurations required. This dynamic microphone boasts a cardioid polar pattern for outstanding off-axis rejection, and a delightfully lo-fi 200Hz–4kHz frequency response. To top it off, the PhōnFreq's convertible half-yoke mount supplies you with four ultra-precise placement options. Whether you use it on drums, vocals, harmonica, or something else entirely, the PhōnFreq is your first-class boarding pass to the textural, lo-fi grit that makes a track jump out of a mix.

Telephone-style effects made easy

The PhōnFreq is the easiest way to achieve lo-fi, telephone-style effects we've ever encountered here at Sweetwater. Back in the day, we'd have to duct-tape a telephone receiver to a mic stand, wedge it into a recording or live mic setup, or dream up some other DIY'd method. Not only does the PhōnFreq allow you to create low-fidelity effects with a small, half-pound microphone, it also includes a convertible half-yoke mount that gives you four different mounting options. Standard provides a 45-degree articulation up and down. Reverse Yoke permits full 360-degree articulation with the mic body reversed. 90-degree Mount screws the mount directly to the body for a 90-degree, side-address, low-profile option. Finally, Handheld removes the mount entirely for the old-school hand-cupping technique favored by harmonica players.

Reviews

Lo-Fi High Five
I've been waiting for a mic like PhonFreq. There are so many opportunities to use this mic for adding texture and depth, especially in the studio. Think beyond harmonica and telephone voice. Imagine (with proper placement) using it as an overhead for drums, as an additional guitar mic, or my personal favorite: Accordion.
There's no sense complaining about the frequency response, the PhonFreq delivers exactly what it says it does. And that's why you need it in your toolbox. (It is worth noting, however, that this mic has the most excellent off-axis rejection, adding to its live music applications.)
The mic clip is a no-brainer. And there is no need for a DI box. Best of all, there are no switches, dials, or buttons to break or get in the way, which gives you or your engineer the ability to mold the sound of this mic to best fit your situtation. Worth the money? Yes! Would I recommend? Yes!

Fantastic!
This is an absolutely awesome microphone I've made telephone microphones before from an actual vintage telephone they're always problematic needing 9 volt power difficult to fit an XLR plug into the base and nearly impossible to hook to a mic stand this solves all those problems it's amazingly solid
Music background: Multi instrumentalist, Vocalist, Producer
Incredible Mic
I actually prefer this over my other vocal mics. The lofi effect isn't so much that you don't come through loud and clear. I probably wouldn't use it as a lead vocal mic, but for background vocals, it is perfect. You should definitely pick one up if you want a cool, cheap lofi vocal mic.

PhonFreq a Zoid!
This thing rocks! What a great nostalgic idea to include the phone receiver as part of the design! Cool as the name "PhonFreq"!
Music background: 30 years in bands
Really great!
If you have a use for a lo-fi microphone, you won't go wrong with the Solomon Phonfreq. Great Lo-fi sound, quality construction, nicely designed stand mount, and an XLR jack to simplify PA connection.
