MXL’s Flagship Tube Mic with Sweepable Polar Patterns

Years ago, MXL set out to create the ultimate tube microphone: the Revelation. No corners were cut and no stones were left unturned in MXL’s pursuit of sonic excellence. The MXL Revelation II reimagines this popular mic using modern, more reliable, and more sustainable components to create a longer-lasting centerpiece of your studio. This tube condenser microphone has been built to pass the most rigorous audio applications with flying colors. From pop vocals to classical brass, the Revelation II is a potent workhorse. Its gold-sputtered, 6-micron K47 twin capsules are borrowed from a reigning champ of the audio world that is acclaimed for its velvety vocal pickup and larger-than-life presence. Enhanced with MXL’s EF86 pentode circuitry, the Revelation II springs to life with bell-like harmonics and reinforced, clean fundamentals as you dial up the tube character. The MXL Revelation II’s power supply features a continuously variable polar pattern that spans roomy omnidirectional and figure-8 types as it buckles down to a tight, lead vocal–tickling cardioid pickup. The power supply also has a 125Hz highpass filter to help tame proximity effects on singers and trim fat on bass instruments. On the rear of the mic is a -10dB pad switch to help prevent overages caused by loud sound sources like screaming guitar amps and explosive kick drums. Ensuring your signature sound is within reach on fly dates, the Revelation II ships in a heavy-duty locking aluminum flight case with cutouts for the included power supply, premium 7- and 3-pin Mogami cables, and shockmount.

Note: Only use the included power supply to power your Revelation II tube microphone. MXL recommends using the mic in an inverted (upside-down) orientation to prevent heat from altering the diaphragm through prolonged use. Please verify that the voltage switch on your power supply is set to the proper value (110/220VAC) before firing up your mic for the first time. Also, be sure that the power supply is turned off when plugging in and unplugging cables. Got other questions? Please contact your Sweetwater Sales Engineer.

Authentic tube character

Some of our favorite studio vocal mics have been regarded for their clean, character-rich tube circuitry. The MXL Revelation II responds in kind with an internal EF86 tube to supply rich harmonics and fat, full fundamentals.

Variable polar pattern

Whether it’s an intimate vocal or an explosive drum room you’re attempting to capture, the Revelation II’s continuously variable polar pattern has you locked and loaded for cardioid, figure-8, and omni pickups — along with all stops in between.

The MXL promise

Since 1998, MXL Microphones — a division of Marshall Electronics — has designed affordable, high-quality microphones for the home and project studio. In its two-decade-plus run, MXL has proven a consistent innovator in the studio, broadcast, streaming, and worship microphone markets. In fact, ask a handful of experienced Sweetwater studio engineers, and you’ll discover that many of us cut our teeth recording on MXL condensers mics. Microphones like the Revelation II large-diaphragm tube condenser are able to deliver professional results on any lead source in your project. And since many MXL microphones come internally wired with a premium Mogami cable (another Marshall Electronics brand), you can be sure every MXL you buy from Sweetwater is rated to deliver quiet, consistent performance you can trust. In fact, we stand behind it with our exclusive extended 2-year warranty.

The MXL Revelation II includes a flight case, power supply, Mogami cables, and shockmount.

Reviews

AN EXCELLENT U-47 CLONE!
I've previously worked with vintage U-47's,and this one is pretty close to sounding like the ones from the 70's. I'm a baritone,so it works well for me,and I don't need a de-esser with the response I get from the Revelation II. I do Jazz tinged R&B,so it suits my voice pretty well. If you're looking for that U-47 sound but don't have the thousands of dollars for the Telefunken, this could do until you get that hit you're looking for. For this price (or even more), I don't think there's another mic that compares. You can hear this mic on my Youtube channel, and on streaming services.

Creamylishious delight to the ear and senses, ONo Dakine!

I've had many mics and this for the studio is my favorite ever. I never dreamed I would be able to afford such a wonderful studio mic. Anyone who enjoys vocalizing will love the luscious delicious creamy sound this mic delivers. It will make you want to sing it sounds so friggin good! Man with a good set of headphones and my trusty Joe Meek Twin Q this mic has won us a Hoku award for our first album.

I would not use the word warm but inspiring! Got mine in 2020 during covid. I started scoring radio airplay on HPR and started the Big Chief Thunder Project with it in 2022. This is a big mic and you will need a heavy duty studio mic stand for it. So be prepared for that additional cost! The comparable Neumann dual diaphragm tube mic is $ and it does not have contiguously variable polar patterns on it. It would cost 700% more for a Neumann. There is a 9 pin XLR cable supplied with it which connects to the power supply. Didn't know they even made those. The Mogami cables are top flight! I still can't imagine how MXL can make such a masterpiece for such a bargain price. Think I only paid $ for it in 2020 and the $ price point is still real bargain cuz! Since this mic is a permanent fixture in my studio I have repurposed the nice case for a smaller Presonus mixer.

Music background: Mom was a music teacher so I had piano all my life, picked up trumpet for school band concert band jazz band. Rock and jazz keyboards from the 60's on. I have a Joe Meek Twin Q andf a Focusright 18i20 and run Ardour with KX Studio with Ubuntu 14.04 Linu
Outstanding Tube Mic
I purchased the original MXL Revelation Mic for about $ when they first came out and still think it was worth every penny. I now own two of these mics. It is my all time favorite mic. The Revelation ll is the the exact same mic (spec) with a few minor cosmetic changes and a better price. Please read the Sound on Sound magazine reviews of both versions of this mic. I also use the Shure SM7B. The 7B can best be optimized with a high gain (70-80dB), selectable low impedance (300-600 ohms) preamp. Additionally I use the AKG 414 MKll. A stellar condenser mic. Like I said the MXL Revelation is my all time favorite.

AWESOME, JUST AWESOME
LIKES
Very solid construction (mic, power supply and cable)
EF86 tube (same as U67)
Large transformer output stage
Continuously adjustable pickup pattern (infinite patterns not just 9 to select from)
Huge, delicious tone (rivals 47-style mics by other venders)
Smooth, flat, frequency response (not sibilant at all)
Lots of proximity effect
Amazing price/performance

DISLIKES
Relatively high self noise (I attribute to EF86 tube)
Stand-mount could be heavier duty

These sound amazing on my DW studio drum set. My 24" kick drum has a full outer head (no hole) and this mic makes it sound massive, tight and deep. I also use three Revelation tube mics on my tom toms, it's the tone I've always.

For my baritone vocals I like the Revelation better than my WA-47. It's rich and juicy with zero harshness in the high frequencies.

MXL hit it out of the ballpark with the Revelation tube mic, this mic is not like anything they offered in the past.

Great performance, great price, what's not to like?

Good music to you!

You Can Do Better
This mic honestly sucks. Mids are lacking, it is WAY too sibilant (even more than my TLM103), and the built-in high pass filter is useless. It is too aggressive at 125Hz and makes vocals sound thin and boxy because it removes a lot of body. The Avantone CV12 is a much better option if you want to spend $ on a tube mic.
