Reviews

Hidden genie in this MXL small diameter condenserCK
I've used Avantone CK-1s, Sennheiser 604, Lewitt LCT 040s , Röde M5s, and finally this MXL V67N. These are all mics from longstanding microphone makers. I'd overlooked MXL for years in the SDC category and decided to try one since Sweetwater had a sale making the mic $ cheaper and putting it on a par with the others listed.

The low end, smooth frequency plot to 20K and richness from the MXL V67N was absolutely unexpected. This is the only microphone of the ones I've mentioned to have a transformer output. This makes a world of difference - the low end clarity and richness through the mids with an open and extended high end with no bump put the V67N in a category more deserving of a higher end AKG or a Neumann.

I was initially turned on to this mic from a fellow sound engineer who was using a single V67N as a room mic for a large (40 by 60) gathering space and the sound on the recording of the tech briefing with Q&A from audience members was quite clear and easy to understand. That was a few years ago and until this recent special deal from Sweetwater, I'd totally put MXL out ot my mind. The V67N from MXL punches well above the price and is at home with higher end SDCs.

Fantastic Microphone.
Did great in the head to head against the Shure SM-57.
Different Performance from Other Similar Mics
I bought the V67N out of curiosity. I own quite a few pencil condensers in this price range. Most of them produce a "crisp" result when used on acoustic instruments. This mic has more mid-mid range than my other ones. I liked the way it sounded when used to record one of my acoustic guitars that has doesn't have a lot of natural bottom. It wasn't crisp enough on my other acoustics. All in all, it's a great mic for the price and I will have projects that it will work well for
