Black Lion’s Patchbay-equipped 500 Series Rack

Black Lion Audio’s PBR 8 500 Series rack was a huge hit at Sweetwater. Now, the PBR 8-500 ups the ante with a host of upgrades that boost performance across the board. Equipped with a fully balanced TT (tiny-tel, a.k.a. Bantam) patchbay, the PBR 8-500 is an 8-slot 500 Series chassis with unlimited routing options for quickly dialing in sounds without your modules having to be mounted in any particular order. That means with the PBR 8-500, you can easily audition a signal chain, re-route it, split it via one of the patchbay mults, send it to modules in another rack, route it back, then output it — all from the chassis’ front panel! The Black Lion Audio PBR 8-500’s exemplary flexibility makes it ideal for the complex signal chains and parallel processing that are commonplace in modern studio operations.

Custom-tensioned, gold-plated connections

Maintaining signal integrity while providing versatile routing, 500 Series racks play a crucial part as the centerpiece of today’s studios. Black Lion Audio’s fastidious attention to detail ensures that the PBR 8-500 is the logical choice to serve in this critical role. Designed with the same indestructible build quality of Black Lion’s industry-standard PBR series patchbays, the PBR 8-500’s front-panel patchbay now features custom-tensioned TT jacks that are gold plated (as are the XLR and DB25 connectors on the rear panel) for optimized, audiophile-grade conductivity and signal clarity.

Clean, isolated power with plenty of current

The engineers at Sweetwater know that power is the backbone of your entire 500 Series rig, and it can determine how well everything performs. That’s why Black Lion leverages On Slot technology to ensure that clean, isolated power with plenty of current is delivered to each of the PBR 8-500’s eight slots. You can rest assured that noise or crosstalk from one module will not affect another, thanks to per-channel power regulation. The chassis’ beefy power supply provides a maximum of 400 milliamperes per rail per slot, with an overall 1.6A (1.8A non-continuous) per rail for the ultra-quiet, reliable performance you expect from Black Lion.

Black Lion Audio: the mod squad

Founded in Chicago in 2006, Black Lion Audio has made its mark on the audio industry by hot rodding audio equipment and upgrading the sound quality of popular music production gear, elevating industry-standard products to new levels of sonic quality. Though the company started off modding gear from other manufacturers, the staff's cumulative expertise has resulted in a distinct line of boutique mic preamps and word clocks. BLA gear and modded gear can be found in studios from Los Angeles to New York to Nashville and heard on projects from artists like Maroon 5, Alison Krauss, Metallica, T-Pain, George Strait, MGMT, Beyoncé, George Duke, Slayer, Erykah Badu, Rod Stewart, and more.

Reviews

Well built but the patch bay is a waste - full of regret
First of all the unit is built really well, so there's that. I thought the patch bay was a nice addition... until I received the unit and realized it uses the Tiny Telephone connectors. I thought "no problem" I'll just use patch cables with Tiny Telephone on one end and 1/4" on the other. Well, to my surprise cables like that don't exists. So sure you can use the patch bay with your other rack gear as long as that gear has Tiny Telephone connectors - and what gear out there uses those?... None!! So in essence you can use the built in patch bay unto itself but for not to interface out to other gear. USELESS. So much regret in buying this unit, a waste of two perfectly good slots on it. Hoping this review helps steer you elsewhere.

I would return it but I already switched out a previous purchase of a defective Radial Devices lunchbox unit for this one and just don't have the heart to do that to Sweetwater. I also really would prefer not to have to pack it up and ship it back. So I figured I'd live it with it and take it out on the manufacturer in this review for making such a horribly thought through product.
