Transient Control, the Easy Way

Do you ever wish you could re-shape transients? Sweetwater has a 500 Series module you should know about. Leveraging SPL's Differential Envelope Technology, TDx Transient Designer gives you level-independent control over the attack and sustain characteristics of any sound for increased power and presence in your recordings. With TDx, attacks can easily be emphasized or de-emphasized; sustain can be shortened or lengthened. If you've ever tried to achieve this with a compressor/limiter, you already know you've been using the wrong tool for the job.

The right tool for the job

With just two knobs, TDx gives you explicit control over the attack and sustain of your signals: invaluable for creating huge, punchy drums and in-your-face guitars — and having everything sit perfectly in your mix. TDx includes a mix control for easy parallel processing of wet and dry signals, as well as an output level knob. Add serious dynamics processing to your arsenal with SPL's TDx Transient Designer.

Precise transient control: a new way to approach your mix

Besides basic EQ and panning, you'd be surprised how close to perfect you can get your mix using only the SPL TDx Transient Designer. It's simple to use — adjust the attack knob to either sharpen or soften transients, and use the sustain control to fine-tune how quickly sounds decay. Use sharper attacks with shorter sustain to place elements up front in the mix, and soften transients while enhancing sustain to place elements further back. Using the Mix knob, dial in a bit of unprocessed signal to taste.

Manage dynamics without affecting loudness

The reason we like the TDx Transient Designer is that it gives us control over dynamics without resorting to compression. You may find you can use milder compression ratios and settings on tracks that have been treated with TDx, resulting in more dynamic and natural-sounding mixes.

SPL TDx Transient Designer 500 Series Module Features:

  • Level-independent control over attack and sustain characteristics of any sound
  • Leverages SPL's powerful Differential Envelope Technology
  • Attack control boosts or attenuates attacks
  • Sustain control shortens or lengthens sustain
  • Mix control for easy parallel processing of wet and dry signals
  • Output level control
  • On/Bypass switch; Signal-present LED
  • Single-slot module; requires compatible 500 Series chassis
  • Crafted in Sound Performance Lab's Niederkrüchten, Germany facility

Reviews

Great creative tool for under 500!

This thing is super easy too use & is super fun to use - I really like using to make too tight hi- toms bigger or low toms tighter; most of all, I love it on Snares. Also use it as a quick fixer/tighten upper.

The mix knob is such a great tool & for the price.

And for under $ it's a 500 series that has all the hardware in a safe metal box casing? Half my expensive 500 series don't have a metal cover to keep it safe (+SPL didn't cut corners).

Yes, you do have to mess with it to get the exact sound you want, but after you use it little bit & experiment with it; I found it easy & useful for stuff that doesn't really need a compressor & just needs to brought forward with a little EQ or some extra spice & as a creative tool! If I use it on guitar/synth or Vocals I usually blend it with mix knob.

This was my first 500 series dynamic/Shaper style module, and even now with having the Elysia Transit Shapper & SPL MK3 (+ other 2x full 10 unit 500 chassis lol) - I still love this little guy & comes in handy!

I just couldn't stand to see this thing with 3 stars!? Please make more 500 series soon SPL! Maybe stereo compressor? ;)

So-So. Need more time with it.
I wish the knobs had a center indent on the Attack and Sustain controls so you have it dialed in right on zero. I read mixed info online as to where to place it in the signal chain. For starters, I put it in front of the compressor and wasn't happy with the results I was getting in my attempt to smooth the attack on a guitar solo. Maybe I need to experiment a little more or place it after the compressor. But if you put the sustain too high, it gets very noisy.
Music background: Always learning.
