How do I turn off ACPI mode in Windows 2000?

If you have all your device on IRQ 9 in Windows 2000 it’s because you are running in ACPI mode. Here’s how you can switch back to the normal Win98-controlled IRQs.

* WARNING: YOU MUST HAVE ALL HARDWARE DRIVERS AVAILABLE AT RESTART. This will re-detect ALL your hardware, and any hardware drivers needed will be asked for. THERE IS A CHANCE THIS WILL RENDER YOUR SYSTEM UNBOOTABLE, do this at your own risk.

To disable ACPI, please change the system setting from ‘ACPI-PC’ to ‘Standard-PC’. Right-Click on My Computer -> Properties -> Hardware -> Device Manager -> Computer -> ACPI-PC -> Drivers -> Update Drivers -> Select List -> Standard-PC.

Note that changing this means that all drivers of your hardware are re-installed (keep the driver disks available). Additionally, make sure that PNP OS INSTALLED in BIOS is set to NO (very important).

Windows 2000 sometimes doesn’t like having the HAL changed after Windows is installed, whilst it is possible to do so a format and following the instructions on the links below is the proper way to change the role. Press F5 or F7 just after Win2000 setup asks you to press F6 to setup scsi drivers from a disk. Windows setup does not give you a prompt, so continue pressing the key until the right time occurs. F7 installs standard pc with no prompt, and F5 allows you to choose the HAL of your choice or provide a 3rd party HAL.
