Roland SPD-SX: Factory Reset
How to perform a factory reset on a Roland SPD-SX
In this guide, we will show you how to back up data and how to restore the SPD-SX back to its factory settings. Resetting the device will erase all your custom settings, so make sure to back them up. Follow the sections below to get started.
Back up user data
TIP: Depending on how much user data is stored on the SPD-SX, the backup process may take a bit of time. Do not turn the device off while the backup is being performed.
Performing a factory reset will erase all of your user data and bring the SPD-SX back to its original out-of-the-box state. So before performing the reset, it’s good practice to back up your data on a FAT or FAT32 formatted USB thumb drive. Follow these steps to back up your data.
- Connect the USB thumb drive to USB MEMORY port on the back of the SPD-SX.
- Press MENU, navigate to UTIL and then use the DOWN cursor arrow to select SAVE (USB MEM).
- Select which type of backup you would like to perform:
- KIT + SETTINGS: Only backs up kits and system settings.
- ALL: Backs up all waves, kits, and system settings.
- Name the backup file, press ENTER, and then press ENTER once more to perform the backup. Disconnect the USB thumb drive once completed.
Perform the factory reset
To perform a factory reset on the SPD-SX, you will need to download the Factory Data file from Roland’s website and transfer it from the USB thumb drive to the device. The reset process will take approximately 3-5 minutes. Follow these steps to complete the factory reset.
- Go to the Roland SPD-SX download page to download the Factory Restore Data file.
- Navigate to your Downloads folder, extract the .zip file, and then connect the USB thumb drive to your computer.
- Copy and paste only the newly extracted Roland folder to the root directory of the USB thumb drive. After the transfer is complete, remove the USB thumb drive and connect it to the SPD-SX.
- Press MENU, navigate to UTILITY and select LOAD (USB MEM).
- On the next screen, select ALL, and then select Factory_V101. After it’s complete, you’ll receive a confirmation message.
- If you need to load your backup data, repeat steps 4 and 5 below and select the backup file instead of the Factory_V101 file.
