How to remove old versions of OMS and Freemidi and install latest versions of each and configure for the MOTU Fastlane USB for use with OMS!
In order to use your FastlaneUSB with your G4 , You Must have OMS and FreeMidi installed. You can get the latest OMS Installer (Version 2.3.8) and FreeMidi (Version 1.47) from www.opcode.com and www.motu.com respectfully. First you must remove any existing pieces of older or current OMS and FreeMidi installs.
Here are the steps to take:
Find and Trash the following: (if you don’t have them don’t worry)
Opcode Folder (in your Mac Hard Drive)
FreeMidi Applications Folder (in your Mac Hard Drive)
OMS Folder (In your System Folder)
FreeMidi Folder (In your System folder)
OMS Preferred Device (in your Control Panels Folder)
FreeMidi Power Plug (in your Extension Folder)
FreeMidi Soft Synth Extension (in your Extension Folder)
FreeMidi System Extension (in your Extension Folder)
Motu USB Driver ( in your Extensions Folder)
Open Music System (in your Extension Folder)
FreeMidi Preferences (in your Preferences Folder)
FreeMidi Setup Preferences (in your Preferences Folder)
FreeMidi Soft Synth Preferences (in your Preferences Folder)
Once these items are in the trash, restart your computer, then upon restart ,cancel any warning messages , and empty your trash before continuing.
Once you are back up and have emptied your trash ,use Sherlock II (under your Apple Menu) to search for these keywords :
OMS
FreeMidi
Open Music System
Anything that comes up you can delete from sherlocks list.
Now that you are rid of any OMS and FreeMidi items , you can install the latest versions of each accordingly:
1.Install OMS version 2.3.8
2.Choose RESTART after OMS installation is complete.
3.Install FreeMIDI 1.47
4.Choose RESTART after FreeMidi installation is complete.
5. With the Fastlane USB connected to the computer, launch OMS Setup (found in the Opcode Folder on Mac HD) , create a new Studio Setup , and Search (Modem and Printer Ports should NOT be checked) for devices. The Fastlane USB should be detected. Hit the OK button twice until the “Save” screen appears.Just hit “Save” and you will see your new OMS Setup appear.
Go under the “Studio” Menu in OMS Setup and Choose “Add device per Port” and then click the “add” button. You will see two red question marks appear connected to the FastlaneUSB , this is good. These are your two midi ports on the Fastlane USB.You can double click on the question marks to customize the Midi Devices if desired.
6.Thats it , save your OMS Setup (if customized) by choosing “Save” under the “File” menu then Quit.
7.Any program that uses OMS will now work with the Fastlane.
8.See Operational Manual for your Sequencer Software for futher setup info.
If you are still having problems with it working , you may have a Extensions Conflict. Other USB drivers for Printers ,Scanners etc… could conflict with the Motu Midi Drivers.
Go to your Extensions Manager and choose the “Mac OS 9.x Base Set”. Hit the “Duplicate Set” button in the bottom right corner , and rename it “Music” or “Studio”. Now add (Check) the boxes for all of the OMS , FreeMidi and Motu Drivers (and any other Music application Extensions or Control Panels needed) and then restart. This will turn any other 3rd party drivers such as Printer,Scanner Drivers off. You should also remove those devices USB cables from the Mac during troubleshooting as well…
